You have a totally valid point about the Manu thing, although in some ways it could be argued that the Pats are the old Fergie-era Manu on steroids because of the existence of the (supposedly levelling) salary cap - intended so that any team can supposedly win on any given Sunday. The patriots won 17 games and lost 2 this season - and even those two were comparatively meaningless other than the fact I was at both of the feckers!

The combination of the media-churlish and tactically ruthless head coach (Belichick) and metronomically efficient pretty boy QB (Brady) has to understandably completely annoy the fans of every other team.

I went to my first game here in 1998, so I did see the Crap Pats before this current juggernaut, but the team has been largely built around Brady, with a revolving supporting cast of fundamentally good players trained up to play like superstars.

American football is obviously still a team sport (in the form of three or more subset teams), but one where very few players feature on more than one of offense (sic), defense (sic) and the other less used, but often difference-making, formations that include punt return, kick-off and extra point crews.

That said, the quarterback logically dominates proceedings, especially so if those around him have been drilled to a fraction of a second in terms of where they should be and what they should be doing.

Belichick has the knack of spotting players with promise that might have been otherwise unsuccessful at other teams to "do a job" and turning them into well-oiled machines.

It's particularly telling that it is quite rare for these same players to do particularly well once they move on to other teams because of the lure of extra salary. Their effectiveness is down to their co-ordination with the rest of the players in their unit.

If I were to make a lame footballing analogy. Belichick manages to get his teams to play a bit like that Arsenal invincible team from the early days of the Premier League - where the defence was a solid unit that could be relied upon to keep mostly clean sheets, but there would always be at least one goal at the other end.

On the contrary, im warming to them after that, ace, thanks for the insight.
This made me chuckle though

" The patriots won 17 games and lost 2 this season - and even those two were comparatively meaningless other than the fact I was at both of the feckers!"
