A History of Racing in Twenty Five Horses by Christopher McGrath.

A wonderfully detailed and well-researched book about horseracing in Britain. McGrath, a great racing journalist who really knows the game who I'm personally a big fan of, has gone right back to 1704 when a Yorkshireman called Thomas Darley shipped an Arabian Colt back to Yorkshire from Syria where he was working as Her Majesties Counsel.

The familial line that the twenty five game-changing horses he writes about come from can be traced through the centuries back to the original thoroughbred that Darley brought back to these shores. McGrath also furnishes the chapters with social, political, and world history and the development of racing in Britain through vivid witty anecdotes and historical fact. The closing chapters were fascinating regarding the revolution in breeding horses and the soaring wealth that came from that commercial development of breeding starting with Northern Dancer in the early sixties right through to Sadlers Wells in the early eighties, Galileo, and finally in recent times the herculean Frankel. A thoroughly absorbing read.
