I don't do anything resembling serious games these days, but I still have to renew my patch and do fitness bollocks every year and, for once perhaps paid more attention than normal.

There were two rather baffling answers to a couple of posed hypothetical scenarios - to the extent that I don't think I'd follow the FIFA/USSF directive unless it was a genuine "big" game.

1) A red attacker is through for an otherwise clear one-on-one with the opposition blue keeper where he is clearly fouled, but in a careless manner. A following red team mate immediately puts the loose ball into the goal. What decisions should the referee should make?

Here is my logical answer:

Spoiler:

Award the goal and caution (yellow card) the keeper as a goal scoring opportunity was Not effectively denied.

Here is the official FIFA-approved answer:

Spoiler:

Award the goal and send off (red card) the keeper as he still denied the goal scoring opportunity to the player that was fouled.

Which means, amongst other things, that:

Spoiler:

A smart attacking team should always try to get a second player to score after a GK foul in the box - even if the fouled player is able to get up and score himself.

2) A red attacker is about to score with a tap in to an empty net from one yard out when a blue defender screams extremely loudly at him from less than two yards, to the extent that the red player is distracted enough to shank his shot wide. What decisions should the referee make?

Here is my (perhaps not quite-so?) logical answer:

Spoiler:

It's a clear denial of a goal scoring opportunity, so it's a red card to the defender (this would be considered unsporting conduct and a yellow card issued elsewhere on the pitch) and, at least to my mind, the act of denial is not so very different than a simple attempt at a foul (or, less acceptably, a spit/punch thrown but not landed) that would be a nailed-on penalty. I'd therefore give a penalty.

The FIFA-approved answer:

Spoiler:

They agree about the denial of a goal scoring opportunity and a red card bit, but they say it's an indirect kick at the point of infraction (which means an IFK out to the edge of the six yard box nearest to where it happened).

Eh? Seems a strange response to me.

I can see some problems with this in youth games if coaches feel it might work in a tight game late on.

All that said, we don't really want any red teams scoring, do we?

TBF, I went for the officials' first answer, but the second one got me - it used to be called Verbal Obstruction didn't it?  And Obstruction was always an Indirect Free Kick.

But if sending someone off I would have thunk that automatically made it a penalty.

I thought a yellow and a penalty might be fairer?

I wouldn't have given a penalty though.

I'd call him a ponce and tell him sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.

Seriously though who'd be a ref especially in todays professional world of 100 cameras

Methinks it was a rhetorical question, Sheeps, unless I'm missing summat and your everyday footie refs are getting paid 70k now to keep control of the beautiful game played on shit pitches by many shit teams amongst all the dog shit on the park
