Thanks For posting Sheeps, I love racing history. Coincidentally enough I'm reading a Lester Piggott biography at the moment and was reading about a race he was in at Birmingham racecourse. Racing on the whole has weathered the closures ( let's face it, Newmarket has been racing HQ since Charles II made it so in in the 1660's and it's still going from strength to strength) but its still an important part of the overall history. Cheers!

Ok for the 'biggies' like Newmarket and Cheltenham and York and the like but when I walk the dog around Pontefract race course I get the feeling it needs a lot of investment.

p.s. I also bag the dogs shite as well.

It is ok for the biggies you mention. Why? Because they have the best and most challenging racecourses. In Cheltenham's case arguably the best racecourse in the world. Iím a big fan of smaller courses because even if they donít get the top races, they also donít attract the office party piss up crowds who tend to get under the feet of racing enthusiasts like my good self at the bigger more popular meetings. I love the smaller, more charming, and rural courses and love visiting them but because they only have a few days a year of racing they always struggle financially. In Wetherby's case (an excellent course by the way) their biggest day is Boxing Day so if the weather is freezing and its called off (which happens most years) that's the potential takings down the drain. And without getting on my soapbox the big Bookmakers don't pay into racing or racecourses anything like the amount they should. And in the last couple of years there has been a company called Arc Racing who have become an annoying zit on the face of racing and have been dipping their grubby little mits into the appropriation of the more smaller vulnerable racecourses and who's sum total thus far of positive outcomes for racing from their involvement could be best summed up if you imagine Frank Spencer walking into the gift shop at the Royal Doulton factory with a plank of wood on his shoulder all in a fluster because he's lost his cat and he fears it might have done a fucking whoopsie somewhere.

*gets off soapbox*

Why don't racecourses have meetings every week to make some dosh.

There are a myriad of reasons why they don't do that but I can't be arsed to type them all. Instead I'll bore you to death with them in the pub.

I see that Victoria Pendleton's started as a jockey. I wouldn't mind sharing a weighing room with her.

Easy tiger! I think she is doing it as a short-term challenge/project rather than a brand new career. The aim was to learn the basics and then to progress through the year and conclude by riding in one of the big chases at the 2016 Cheltenham Festival. She's got the fitness and athleticism so fair play to her for having a crack at this. A few of the purists have got a bit sniffy at somebody from 'outside' the game getting a chance at race riding when there are very hardworking apprentice jockeys who don't have VP's public profile, and who for which doors into the big races are not open. In my personal opinion I find it interesting and it will hopefully promote Jumps Racing positively to the wider public.
