Turner prize last night. Went to Duncan Campbell and his video art. As always it prompted debate especially about the premise of video art. Whatever you think about it, it certainly forces questions about art itself and what it is, but does that mean its art? Has art simply become an inwardly looking form there for its own gratification?. Personally i see little artistic value and almost zero aesthetic quality in video art and am getting a bit tired of the "if it makes you think about it, it must be art" philosophy

That's the one I'm sticking with. But I'd re-word it to: "If it makes you think, then it's art."

Tiny change different slant and maybe more appropriate, dunno though. Lots of things make you think. I see litter on the floor and think what lazy selfish twat dropped that and why. It isn't art though is it? Or is it if Tracey Emin places it there?

I was in The Star the other night, they have a lovely log fire. I was reading Uncut and looked into the fire. A pile of coats were next to it and the pub cat sat on them while the owners watched. That got me thinking all kind of things. Is that art? Any random happening or scene can provoke thought processes in sentient beings.

I just think certain art too easily exploits this presentation-observation-perception triangle that inevitably happens in all facets life. It gets the effect and claims the cause rather like a rain dancer claims the rain. It happens anyway despite the claims kind of thing.

No you silly fucker. What I meant about something that makes people think was anything that somebody creates in the sense of it being a film, an oil painting, a sculpture. If somebody tries to convey their feelings or a message through art and it makes the viewer of it think then it's art. What you were seeing in the pub fire was the beauty of life.

Pardon my ignorance, but as the prize is named after a famously brilliant painter, why isn't the prize dedicated solely to painters?  It would make it a lot easier to decide and, of course, cut out all the shit like unmade shitbeds and the like.  I thought MTV was for video prize-giving anyway.

Too many fucking awards in society for not enough people deserving of them!  Grrr.
