Two or Three will never play for the club again said Simon G after the debacle at Barnsley. We can all put in a bad shift but to not run up and down is disgraceful he added or something like that, So no Keogh, no Varrilyn and no Connolly, just about right if you ask me. Soz Leb but i cannot see one redeeming element of the lads play. No defensive outlet support, no tracking back, no forward support, no tackling, no creativity and worse, no attitude. The lad is finished. Nunez was lucky  to be starting but i suppose given the contract he has just, ahem, won  it's in our interest to persevere. However to drop McCormack to the bench was astonishing

So we had the sight of both teams going into the pre match huddle for two different reasons i expect. Paddy won an early header, Bruce at right back and Clayton was in early with a good tackle but it was Burnley who created the first effort sending an header over the bar before cutting through our central defence after Kiz lost possession only to fluff the chance with only the GK to beat. We had more defending to do blocking crosses before Townsend relieved the pressure producing a good run ending with a foul. It was not the most dominant start we have ever produced.

Becchio was back defending a free kick before we produced our first attack, a good left wing build up followed by a cross and a near post corner just flicked over the bar

Townsend was already beginning to look lively as did Thompson but an injury to Kiz forced major changes that actually produced a better balanced side and shape. Bruce went to centre half, Thompson to Full back but not before we played a short while with ten men. Bruce made a good interception before the referee finally awarded us a hand ball after three consecutive shouts for one. Even he laughed about it.

Nunez initiated a good build up and Clayton was busy in midfield but Burnley got a loose ball and shot only for Lonegan to tip over Lloyd Sam came on to bring us up to strength as Kiz limped away. Becchio was beginning to won his headers again like we know he can and Sam out two good crosses  in. We were getting on top but Lonegan had to be out sharp to clear danger. White made a run inside, ignored Nunez and shot wide.

Townsend on his own rounded three defenders and was fouled for the lads second yellow card. Harsh but he had to go just like Bruce did against the same player at Ipswich. White Sliced a clearance but rescued the ball and we attacked as Burnley dropped deeper. We lofted a cross on from the right and gained a corner with Nunez trying a trade mark right footed swirler from the clearance. Becchio was lucky to avoid a booking much to the anger of the many Burnley fans behind him. The next offence and he surely would get one.

We released Townsend to pressure a corner that we took short but Burnley cleared. Again we pressured but it ended with a comedy right footed scooped volley high into the South Stand . The half ended with a couple of unfinished good crosses into the box. a free kick and a corner to summarise our dominance put inability to finish.

We kicked off the second half forcing a throw and then a shot curled past the post. Some puckish  play on the left side of the box gave us a free kick that Burley scrambled away and tried to break themselves but were caught offside. A great long ball found Sam who delivered yet another cross that was cleared for a corner. We curled another shot over the bar as we increased the pressure but Burnley stood tall. A terrific Aidy White surge came to nothing but we kept the momentum with more forays down the wings. A header scraped the cross bar as the Kop raised the noise levels. More crosses and corners followed but still a combination of their resolve and our profligacy kept the scores level.

Burnley then created a little spell of attacking of their own but back we came. Sam dinked a ball to Becchio to get a corner that Burnley scrambled away. Their keeper then did well with a great save to foil Nunez from a free kick. Another shot glanced low past the post and from the dead ball we incredibly found ourselves 0-1 down after they hit a twenty yard volley neatly to send them and their fans into joyful celebrations.

On 69 minutes Forseil replaced Becchio as we combined to press again. Nunez was replaced by McCormack following a Townsend shot that was easily saved. White and The loanee were occasionally getting in each other's way but generally combined well. The latter showed a bit of rare greed choosing to shoot when other options were on. Clayton blasted a shot over the bar as the game entered the final ten minutes of normal time. The Burnley keeper fumbled a Sam cross but we  hammered over the bar. Another low cross evaded every white shirt but was deflected for a corner. The low near post delivery was sliced in for an own goal as two minutes remained. Burnley were devastated, it was cruel on them but again as the great bard once said......

It has to be said that Burnley were employing some outrageous time wasting tactics throughout the game particularly the keeper and we were caught off side as five minutes added time were announced. Sam hit a shot but Burnley broke as alarm bells sounded but Lonergan saved comfortably. back we came for a finale resulting in more time wasting. The ref ran the length of the pitch to book the keeper who still argued with him as the clock froze. finally a punt in the box was fumbled by the keeper as we all expected stalemate. McCormack was on hand to hit it into an open goal. He and the whole place went berserk. The noise was immense ad the celebrations manic, incredible.

I thought we were deserving winners although Burnley adapted to the unfortunate sending off brilliantly. There are very few things in life better than a last gasp winner in front of the kop and not much can enhance that. Two pints in the Shoulder as Mrs Twatnav dropped me off after the game provided just that, finally a merry Christmas

I think Leb was in agreement with you after the Barnsley game... "he's stealing his wage" was along the lines of what he's been saying about him all season.  In fact if it wasn't for his decent understanding with Snodgrass on occasion I think he'd have been finished ages ago.

Great report Doors, reports like yours and Leb's help those too skint to travel to keep abreast of who's climbing up and who's sliding down the Grayson greasy pole of players. Cheers!

Thanks LD.

Sounds like there was a bit more noise. Team needs all the help it can get.

Get out of jail card for SG. Probably 3 minutes away from the sack.
