May I commend this week's episode of "Mark Steel's in Town" to listen to on the BBC i-player.

The format is that Mr Steel visits, delves into the points of interest and delivers a 30 minute stand-up routine on places not often celebrated in the media. A couple of weeks ago he visited Skipton. Unfortunately I picked up on it too late to pass on.

This week was the turn of Walsall - even if you have little knowledge of the place, his routine is very funny.

If you've ever had the pleasure of living thereabouts, it's bostin'.

It's in me blood PM, cheers for that I'll have a listen to the Walsall one.

I heard that one too. Again, very funny. He's obviously taken time and effort to obtain his material. Walsall was week 4. I have been very impressed by the effort he has put into his tongue-in-cheek research and his rapport with the local audience.

I have enjoyed all four of the programmes so far - Skipton, Boston, Lewes and Walsall. Being very familiar with the first and last greatly improved the entertainment.

Next week is Merthyr Tydfil.

On a personal note, my only experience of the place was some quarter of a century ago, to attend the funeral of friend, on a dim, dismal,  dreary, drizzly day. The sort of day directors of dim, dismal, dreary and gritty reality films dream of.

I trust Mr Steel will not hold back and deliver some quality humour and particularly irreverent observations to help suitably exorcise the memory. My friend would have wanted nothing less.

Was Lewes the one with the Battle in, where he was taking the mickey out of the historians who supposed that the advancing army followed the line of the B45366?

A new series started last night, with a visit to half-rice/half-chips, half-Jock/half-not, Berwick-upon-Tweed.

One of the items dissected was the town's football team, Berwick Rangers, who play in the Scottish 3rd division.

Comment was made of the familiarity of the crowd with the team players, who were often born, lived and worked locally, which was a feature of the lower Scottish leagues.

Apparently visiting Celtic supporters took to taunting the home fans with, "Your goalie works in Greggs".

At another club, one of the fans shouted at a player, "You're shite... and so are your dad's chips".

A recommended future tune-in, and probably available on the iPlayer.
