Big fan of Steve Coogan, not so much his mate Rob Brydon but this sounds pretty promising tonight

It hasn't been on yet sheeps and as we have already found out on here time travel backwards might be possible but into the future is a tad more difficult. I'll give it the once over after watching it.

Its about Steve Coogan coming up North to review some restaurants with his wife but his wife leaves him so he brings Brydon instead.

This was exceptionally good, obviously largely improvised to great effect.

Yeah enjoyed it. Very subdued and subtle. Loved the West Pennine scenery as well. No belly laughs but a comical and sad impression contest at the dinner table made me smile. I think the setting has been laid for the two of them to develop a good intriguingly  comical relationship. Nice bit of anguish setting as well with the final conversation with his girlfriend. Another bit of vintage unorthodox Coogan comedy possibly, but we'll give it time.

Enjoyed it too. I suspect that the dark side may see Coogan getting more and more despairing as the series progresses.....

I'm in two minds.

Tonight they struck me as trying to compete in exhibiting their mutual comedic genius. However, I'm happy to accept that the genius of the series will be played out in a parody.

As to scenery - gentlemen, how fortuitous are many us are to have that on our doorsteps?

And the scallops looked spot on.

(Surely Clit-heroe must rank with Penis-tone as amongst the most fnaaar, fnaaar town names in the UK?)

It was bit demanding of one’s attention yes and maybe the expectation barrier was raised a bit too high for the Pontecastlestone region of the county.

Watched it again late last night and I’m guessing here that Coogan is also trying to stitch in a thing about the North in a more subtle and soulful way than say Marconies in search of the North Book which I enjoyed in a clichéd simplistic way. I get the impression Coogan is trying to capture the Northerness and present it in a truthful way which is going to be difficult because Northerness is not media friendly but is something unique yet abstract. Could be completely wrong of course.

edited to add that MrsD has just read that and reminded me that she did call me a pompous arse last night when i replied to her view that it was not very interesting and even less funny

Switched off after 10 minutes this time. I gave them a chance last week, and they blew it. I found the whole thing overwhelminly irritating. Too much smugness and too many impressions.
