That aerial needs fixing!

Very sloppy workmanship.

Usual gigging partners not fancying this but you don't have to look far for fellow Fall fans from all walks of life. Guyfonzo, Robin and i got the18.16 to Piccadilly and 40 minutes later we were in the splendid Port St Beer house in the Northern Quarter. The Dry Bar next followed by the Marble ale shop as we made our way to the Cathedral for this much anticipated gig.

As ever the crowd all devotees of all persuasions were there in  almost ritual attendance. The band came on just after ten and delivered a hour of muddied, unbalanced ramshackled Fall songs. Which is to say that all the ingredients were there, the narrow width hypnotic guitar riffs, driving rhythms, cheap organ fills, backing harmonies and of course MES's sneering, semi intelligible tirades to non fans but the whole thing just didn't knit together. When they do they are unbeatable but for me the cavernous space of Manchester cathedral didn't do them any favours at all. The separate elements of the sound drifted away and got swamped by the hollow volume of space. Maybe he found God there though.

They did provide one surprise. When most had accepted there was to be no encore and drifted off as the lights came on, the band reappeared. Made me laugh anyway but not a gig to file in the favourites bank.

A friend of mine and her boyfriend are frequent gig goerís and love The Fall but they came to the end of their tether with them a couple of years ago after putting up with them being late on stage on a number of occasions at different gigs. The gig that broke the camelís back for them was at (pull me up on this LD if I get the venue name wrong) Hebden Bridge Trades Club. It was a mid-week gig and the band sauntered on stage at 11ish. Played badly for 45 mins and that was that. Tanya and Jim had to get a costly cab back to their home as all public transport had finished for the night. I know Mark E Smith is a unique artiste but there has to be consideration for your audience. I donít care how leftfield, kooky, or good you are.

Yep agree, fuck him, he's had his day and I for one can't be arsed any more paying good money these days to see whether he can be arsed being a professional front man or a professional and can'tbearsed pisshead.

Seen em so many times now but have been generally lucky as most of the gigs have been sound.

It's going to have to be something special to tempt me again. Still no other band anything like them. I think they have become over time this untouchable entity that has attained extreme cultism, beyond criticism. They (he) has worked hard to get that, so fair play to him, i will always love his stuff but over 20 quid for that is not stacking up at all. especially with all the other brilliant stuff around.

You've just got to go Fall gigs in the right frame of mind.  Though these days they're more often great than not.  Last two gigs at the Brudenell were both ace.

Me and a mate from York always turn out for them.  Just go on the piss in Leeds first and have a laugh.  Still a top night out.

On at The Brudenell again in late November.

By the sound of it you'd better move it if you want a ticket.

Can't wait, me.

My younger daughter was at the Beacons festival in Skipton.

On that occasion, Mr Smith and his associates apparently considered it sufficient to entertain the audience for approximately 15 minutes.

Nice work if you can get it.

Well i ended up going after all and glad i did, the band were shit hot even if MES continues to take the piss with his ramshackle inaudible vocals. A real shame his arrogance won't allow brilliant sound engineers at a brilliant venue get them right. Still, oh de ho that's who he is and you have to take the fall on his terms or not at all. That's fine for me and the vast array of fans. It's always a kind of ceremony at a fall gig with folk from all walks of life coming together in a mutual love for a special unique band. One of the dirty bustards needs to take a look at his diet though, jeez he was stinking the whole area out.

Lots of new stuff some I'd not heard before, †a rare performance of no Christmas for John Quays. They played that the very first time i saw then around 79 and i dont think I've heard it live since until Friday.

When this band get going they are phenomenally †good and they were on top of their game Friday. MES was average, his average mindst but i can't help thinking if he could raise his game sometimes these gigs would be something really special.

That's all fair enough LD; you must have been stood near me- between mixing desk and merch stand? Not sure who was shitting themselves, but there were a few Barnsley lads in, judging by the accents.

Smith was well-behaved by his usual standards! Everyone who's had a say on the band's forum seemed to like it. Already looking forward to next year.

Our generation's Van Morrison. When he's good he's very, very good and all that. Last time I saw The Fall was 20 minutes of shite. They may have been back they may not have but I doubt I'd be tempted.
