Paul Gascoigne is said to be in a "comfortable" condition after being involved in a car accident last night.

The incident, involving a Vauxhall Astra, happened at about 9.45pm, on the city's Quayside. The car, in which 43-year-old Gascoigne was a passenger, is believed to have left the road before hitting a lamppost next to Newcastle's historic Guildhall, close to the Tyne Bridge.

Four ambulances were sent to assist the driver and three passengers. Three of them were then taken to Newcastle general hospital for treatment. A 36-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Paul Gascoigne becomes new Garforth Town manager

The ex-England midfielder, 43, has taken over at the Northern Premier League Division One side despite recent health problems, which included another spell in rehab for alcoholism this summer.

Gascoigne, whose previous managerial role saw him last just 39 days at Kettering, said: I feel strong right now.

For me, personally, its a big challenge. I am excited.

I cant wait to get in and get started - but of course I will be nervous.

Gascoigne hit the headlines earlier this summer when, apparently suffering an alcoholism relapse, he turned up during a tense standoff with gunman Raul Moat in the north of England.

The former Newcastle, Spurs and Lazio star said he was a 'good friend' of the fugitive - although it later transpired the two had never met.

Gascoigne was readmitted to a rehabilitation clinic shortly afterwards

I like him, who cant, it's tragic what's happened. I've actually known people in the same situation, we have one in our lives now  and its fecking 'orrible. Only certain sorts of people come out of this, Strong, organised, focused people. Gazza and this other twat aren't that and lots of people are going to be very hurt as he dissolves away. i know everybody means well but no amount of well wishing is going to make it alright. I wish it wasn't like that but it is

Plenty of excuses for him

Few positive male role models
not too bright
too much too young
probably ASD

having said that - he's shown little sign of wanting to help him self. It can only come from within.

He has a choice - Greaves or Best.
