Anthem Alexander 3rd for Grind, but Dock nothing. Cracking racing though, Skyplussed it and watched it tonight. There was a great feature on Irish Rookie. CH4 carry on with great post-race footage and analysis.

Ta for your help - as you can tell, my "bets" aren't wildly informed.

I've only ever been to two horse meetings (York and Kenilworth), but I left with more money than I went with both times through total blind luck.

* My strategy at York, such as it was, revolved around only picking horses with odds of roughly 8/1 that weren't wearing red.

A second and a first - not completely horrible.

I really fancied Eagle Top but alas he was second. He's vey progressive and has the gears so it'll be interesting to see where the owners choose to run next. As for your betting tactics you did to York. People have weirder ones than yours bud. With odds I tend to like 10-1 or 8-1. I find backing short-priced favourites a bit dull. It's about spotting something in the form and backing your own judgement. Bookies odds are not a definite reflection of a horses potential.

The week was all about Ryan Moore, nine winners including on Gleneagles, described by the trainer Aiden O' Brien as the best miler he'e ever trained. Ryan broke the long standing record of eight Royal Ascot winners which was held by Lester Piggott and Pat Eddery.

Very sad news today. One of the great steeple chasers has gone to the stable in the sky. Kauto Star had retired from racing into a dressage career. He had a fall in a paddock last week and was taken to the Equine Hospital in Lambourn for treatment over the weekend but had to be euthanized yesterday. I will raise a glass in your memory tonight Champ. I could go on about the honours he won but I think this picture sums him up. What a champion! R.I.P. Lad! Great tribute here from one of the best about one of the best:

There was something on Radio 4 the other day that shows that race horses are getting faster despite much research in the 70's (and much agreement in the sport) that it wasnt possible to get them any faster. However it is only for short distances. There has been no improvement for longer distances.

Might look for that on iplayer. I've not heard that myself but it sounds interesting. There can be dips and spikes across eras for thoroughbreds performance at short distances of between five or seven furlongs and also for middle distance horses that go well at a mile and two furlongs or a mile and six furlongs. The breeding side of things fascinates me but I don't have the time to educate myself thoroughly on it. Course records do get broken occasionally and sometimes it's just down to an outstanding ability horse. I'll often bet on a horse if it was sired by one of the recent greats like Galileo or King Mambo and it's running at a distance that they excelled at.

Looking at it logically you can imagine the improvements in diet, general training techniques, and the breeding program are going to make horses more powerful. Which would explain better short distant times.

But there is only so far evolution can go in the short term so parts of the anatomy like the heart and lungs and the general respiratory mechanism must have its limits which would impede the development of long distance stamina.

Absolutely H. I wouldn't think that anybody involved with racing is chasing some Super Horse utopia. But the training techniques and equine physiology knowledge have revolutionised training racehorses.

Going to York tomorrow and the card will include The Juddmonte International, one of the biggest prize money races in the world. The first time in fourteen years a guineas winner (Gleneagles) will face a Derby winner (Golden Horn) in a tantalising dual. Not just a two horse race though, some seriously classy horses will be in the shake up with the latter mentioned classic winners including this bad boy. Time Test trained by Roger Charlton and with an interesting jockey booking Pat Smullen. Lets's do this!

My fantasy footie thing is off to the horses again.

Any likely nags for:

BetFred Sprint Cup (British Champions Series)  -  3:45pm, Haydock  -  Saturday 5 September 2015?

I was thinking...

Strath Burn
Waady
Danzeno

...although they don't seem to feature that well in the betting (Danzeno excepted).

Very competitive field and one that I wouldn't bet on, but if I had to I'd pick Magical Memory. I watched it win The Stewards Cup at Goodwood a month ago veeeeeeery convincingly. Frankie Detorri rode it that day but it's of interest he's picked Danzeno for tomorrow instead. You might end up ok.

Ta - I'll switch in Magical Memory for Waady.

Don't fucking blame me if it doesn't come in!

"The prosecution would like to ask the defendant Mr Grind how many legs of Mr Dock's he broke on the night of the 5th after he did all his money on Magical Memory?"
