I have nothing against the man at all but I do think there are some major double standards going on here with regards to Frankie Dettori. 6 month ban for illegal substance believed to be cocaine. But back as the darling of racing.

Most other sports and his reputation would be tainted for life with a mere hint of drugs.

No double standards. The cocaine use was an adult indulging in what a lot of adults indulge in. He tested positive the day after using it in a random test (all the drugs tests in racing on either jocks or horses are not announced to trainers or jockeys, the testers just turn up unannounced at racecourses or training yards) and he served a ban and lost his job as retained rider for the biggest bloodstock organisation on the planet. This was the outcome even though the drug he took wasn’t performance enhancing and wouldn’t have affected his riding skills or fitness. He was daft but a lot of people who follow racing or work in racing realise that for all the money somebody like Detorri is worth he can never really indulge in eating in nice restaurants or boozing it up after a big win because he has to keep at a steady 9st or lower to be anything like competitive. Did he take an illegal drug? Yes. Is he the pin up and idol of thousands of impressionable kids? No.

The worst sin in racing is pulling a horse i.e. stopping it from winning for financial gain. For that you will be given at least a ten year ban from riding, banned from attending any race courses, and be blacklisted to the point that even when your ban is over nobody in racing will even speak to you on the phone, never mind employ you again.

The standards, policing, and common decency in racing makes most other sports look pathetic in how strictly they are regulated and what is expected regarding decent behaviour by its participants. Is there a concerted effort by some trainers to manipulate the handicapping system for financial gain? You bet your bollocks there is. Are bookmakers the scum of the earth who bite the hands that feed them? Very definitely. People in racing and racing fans have very long memories and wouldn’t forget the path Frankie has traversed but they will take a balanced view. As for being back as the new darling of racing. He never left, he has been in that position with the racing public since the late eighties (apart from a few iffy seasons) including when the cocaine thing came to light. He is one of the best horsemen this country has ever seen (we are lucky his Dad packed him off to England at 15 to begin learning his trade with trainer Luca Cumani in Newmarket).

Behind the big smiles and the showbiz flying dismounts is a very driven individual who’s knowledge and experience of top class race riding is hard to articulate fully, but overshadows a misjudged dalliance with a class A drug.

I disagree totally. Football fans and clubs are a fickle bunch who will forgive a player of nearly anything. Some of the shitheads running around on football pitches have done far worse things than dabbled with drugs. I think the low standards and morality of football today can best be seen in the fact that a violent individual like Joey Barton is still employed as a player. Any organisation or club with an ounce of decency wouldn't let that animal through the gate never mind into the first team.

I was actually inferring to the media rather than fans Dock.

And cocaine isn't performance enhancing. Oh I never knew that

Ha Ha! Fair point about the media. But that's what they do isn't it. Frankie has always made good copy, be it in the racing press or the more mainstream press.

There's a few that the likes of the Beeb welcome back - Stan Collymore was one. Yet on the other hand no one will touch Ron Atkinson and Andy Gray etc.

There must be a book that the beeb have:

Dogging offences - 18 month media ban and then forgotten
Possible racist inferences - lifetime ban
Wife beating - it'll blow over in six months
Participate in lurid sexual orgies - that's fine, well it was at the senior Beebs managers house

It's all about horses for courses.

The last three I chose will now be served right after the foie gras.....

It would work particularly well at Longchamps.

Indeed.

What's a bit surreal is that this horsey stuff is connected with collecting "virtual funds" to "spend" at a fantasy footie auction - although there is a separate trophy for other sports too (e.g. NBA, Darts, the Universities Boat Race etc etc).

I'm using my funds to buy back Benteke for next season.

I told you it's a bit surreal.

I like the look of the Husqvarna 460 Rancher. Not sure if it likes the look of me though.

I suppose I could attempt to fix the one I have, but I suspect all that I'll achieve is a different pile of non-functional death tool.

Give me a big high five to show me how capable and safe you are with the 460 Rancher.

Surprisingly, and despite my best efforts, I still have those two.
