What are we going to do?

At the top of the page there is a link to an important announcement from the owners of this bulletin board, stating that it will be shutting down at the end of June.

What are we going to do?
Heyho

We need to find another hosting site, get an export file and set up shop elsewhere
carp

Who does that.
Grind

That would be too bad - this is the only "social" site I routinely visit or really say anything on.

* Not that any of what I say is worthwhile, obviously. *
Heyho

Right then - this has just taken me ten minutes to do. So it is pretty easy to setup a new site.

http://regdafishthinktank.freeforums.org/

Have a look. It's only a starter for ten. Maybe we could use the opportunity to reinvent ourselves. Happy to set it up like
Cutsyke

Don't shoot me down. Go back to OMJ. Seems all the arguing types, except for me and I've done my best to behave myself on here have left.
I've got The Bonfire Of The Vanities thread going on there. We're not that different.

Puts tin hat on.
Late Doors

Blimey, well spotted . Who are the owners ? I have it in my mind that Lol and Tank Girl actually own the forum still and Bearing actually runs it?

I think we should up sticks and start again. Nothing against OMJ Cuts , well the lads who post on it now at least. Who actually "Owns" OMJ these days? it? I get the distinct impression that because I'm mates with MG I'm a bit persona non grata, certainly seem to be in twitter circles anyway. Not that I give a fuck like

Anyway like G I don't go anywhere else but would like to keep this thing going, maybe grow it even. Are you sayng start again on this free forum format H?  Ill help, as long as it doesnt cost too much
Dock

I like the reinvent/ new start angle. As for OMJ I've had a gander a few times over the last few years and I personally think its crap. Might be good for you LU lot as its big on football but it holds no allure to me whatsoever. I like the idea of this place shutting down and floating off into the shadow world of cyberspace forever. A bit like yer man Terence Stamp and his band of baddies in Superman 2 when they get entombed in that tile thing. Consigned to the depths of space forever n' that.
Plastic Man

From what I understand, we don't have to lose anything. We can request an export file to transfer everything to a new forum. Heyho seems up to the job.

By all means we could have a spring clean when it moves, but I'm happy with things the way they are.

I presume Bearing is still the registered contact with the bulletin board owners, or did Grind take over?

Grind knows nothing. Especially about interweb things.

He's attempting to set up an Amazon Echo (received at Christmas!) as he writes.

* Alexa, are we going up as fucking champions?
Heyho

Looking at the stats for this site Bearing is out on his own with overall posts - 27,8045,

Grind, Dock, Forest and Sheeps have also had plenty to say

There are shed loads of zero post / non activated accounts we could easily clear up now.

And there are only around a couple of dozen accounts who have logged in and contributed this year

It's my bitter little mind. It compels me to post.
sheeps

I tend to spend most of my time on Mumsnet.
carp

I won't be joining other forums. Will move with Reg if it gets sorted. Sound simple enough just need to get the export file.

I've never done a phpBB to phpBB data move before!

HELP!!!!
Dock

Should we just go to the new one and register as forum members then? Don't want to jump in if its not allowed. Think I'll have a new name.

*thinks*

And it'll be a chance for a fresh start. No anti-commercialisation of football rants, no racing, just my usual knackerknob opinions, music, and books.

Do we have a moving date?

I will go with the majority but I would not care to lose all the old stuff as mine will be considered literary classics in years to come.

Whats that Brummy Fop have to say on all this?  Cant he advise us what to do. Think its pretty clear that between us we have the combined wit and wisdom of a fish tank to do anything ourselves

To be fair, I've enjoyed his posts a lot more of late.
Plastic Man

Apparently, to date, we have posted a total of 220309 articles.

It would be a shame to lose this collective wisdom.

What do people thing of

1) Asking Heyho to get hold of the "export file" and to set up a new forum? The bulletin board seems to be asking for a donation to access the "export file", which appears to be £60. I'm happy to stunp up a tenner - are there 5 others?

2) Ditching all the previous posts and starting up again?
Grind

I'd be game

I'd personally go for option 2. It wouldn't bother me losing all my old posts or anybody else's. It's just stuff. Not really important in le scheme grande des choses.

Count me in for a fiver. We need to preserve this monument to irrelevance.

I am in the midst of a heavy Eurpoean travel schedule on business (it appears my services are very much in demand) - coupled with the lack of broadband services at home because of BT crap service. The internet suddenly stopped two weeks ago and BT are running out of credible excuses as to why it cannot be fixed.

Frustrated does not even come close!!!!

An 18 year old son at home without access to the gaming community he is part of.... 'nuff said!

Anyway, in the absence of any  access apart from business trips internet access, would somebody please keep me informed as to what is decided - if we migrate elsewhere or otherwise?

It is clear there are people on here who know about these things - just let me know and how to get to any new home please.

Ta very muchly

Would be a shame to loose all of the threads that have been posted on here as some do go a long way back to the start of Reg. So im in and happy to contribute to keeping things as they are.
If a new forum was to be started im happy to go along with that idea too. Just going with the flow..
Heyho

I'm just chatting with the company that host the phpBB forum I set up to see the logistics of moving the data over.

End of my IT techie speak.

To translate:

It's one thing dumping all the shite we all post, it's another being able to put that shite elsewehere.

By the way before we do anything is anyone opposed to a cleanup of all accounts that have never contributed a post on here? There are 100's if not thousands. Might help with the data dump.
Grind

* Worries. *
Dock

Why would it be a shame to loose threads going way back? I don't get it Badge. It's just forum nonsense, and that's coming from somebody who has propped this place up and contributed on a regular basis in plenty of periods when others haven't been arsed. And that latter comment isn't aimed at you bud. Even old Sheepster has gone dark for weeks on end only for him to pop his lovely ancient wrinkled head up like a tortoise looking for some discarded vegetable after fallow periods of him not posting. There have been plenty of occasions when this place needed saving and people haven't done nowt about it, especially taking the time to post anything for others to read and enjoy. So I don't get everybody all of a sudden being arsed about STR (Save The Reg)

Scrap the lot and start again if you ask me.......I know you won't.

I find this to be quite a revelation, that someone would quite happily discard a communal archive of posts.

I had previously assumed that "everybody" would like to have the opportunity to preserve a sense of history that they had been part of creating (assuming there had been no negative impacts on their life), especially when it had no impact on the physical clutter in their lives.

Clearly I was wrong in my assumptions.

Heyho - given that you appear to be the only sentient person to deal with the transition, and assuming that we get confirmation that the forum is to close, what is your opinion regarding our best options, assuming that either we want to retain old posts, or to start again?

Sorry if I'm coming across as flippant about it. I should respect that some people want to keep all the posts. It's just that I personally wouldn't delve back into older threads. It doesn't interest me. I tend to just post on a thread or do a review post, or be a bit daft and then move on to whatever new threads are happening. I'm in the moment then I'm gone..........a bit like a fart. I'll go with whatever people want, and if that means giving a few quid to those of you who want to keep all the gazillions of old posts just pm me and I'd be glad to help out. But just dosh though, no technical expertise. I've only just mastered our Ferguson Videostar. It's a VHS don'tcha know.
Grind

Is there a date when all this has to be done by?

If so, does it make sense to simply divide whatever costs there might be by the number of posters willing to contribute?

I suppose that it wouldn't be a total disaster to lose everything and start again, but this is where I routinely keep track of my (admittedly stupid) football competitions so, as already said, I'd be happy to contribute (maybe via Paypal?) if there's someone with more interweb skills willing to take it on.
Cutsyke

I'll chip in a few quid if you do paypal. As for keeping old stuff, not really my place to say what you should or shouldn't do on here as I'm only an occasional poster.
sheeps

Happy to contribute to any cost involved.
Heyho

Let's see what cost implications there are to release our years of data. I think this should be given free of charge given that the original service was not chargeable. Me thinks this whole shut sown is a bit of a fund raiser. I mean the service was free and there are plenty of alternatives.

I am currently talking to the site owners of the site I mocked up to see what is involved regarding data transfer as well.

I think it would be a shame to lose some of the epic threads on here but we can't be held to ransom
Dalek

May I add my two pennyworth?

If the cost of the transfer of data is reasonable - I am sure the regular posters here will be happy to contribute a few quid (whether they want it themselves or not) to keep all members happy. The more that contribute, the less the individual cost.

That is what a society does. And that is what Reg is.

If the cost is extortionate, our society will collectively decide not to fund it and will start again afresh. Again, that is what a society does. And that is what Reg is.

People on here - tech savvy or not - know a reasonable cost when they see it.

Do we have a cost of transfer yet?

(And, by the way, hats off to those who do know what they are talking about tech-wise. i am happy to leave it to those who do know the ins and outs. Just let me know what is happening)

Cheers (from South of France this week!)

Dalek
Dock

I'm getting up to 16666 (The Number of the Beast, well, ish) posts then I might leave it on here for a while. Seems like a good number to finish on until summat new happens.
Heyho

Dalek - I think asking us to pay to have our data released is a bit cheeky. The site owners would have made any money by advertising. Don't think they will have made enough bucks to be sat next to you on a deck chair in the south of France mon ami but I feel we are being held to ransom a bit.

I've not heard back from the new site regards the ability to take that data and upload it it into the new site either so that may be our deciding factor here.
Heyho

Just had this reply from the new forum:

Hi there,

Our team has been in discussions with MyFreeforum, and while not finalized yet, the discussions are going well and it is looking good to have a solution in place soon. Bottom line is, your original forum will not be lost so for now I’d stay put and look for any future announcements.
Plastic Man

I've been looking through the posts made in response to the request for crowd funding to prevent the forum being closed.

Good news. There may be a reprieve, in the form of a new site owner.

Incidentally, who is the registered owner of this site? We would have needed to know, so they could have requested the export file. "I'm afraid we can't export to a non owner. The rules of dues process are still valid here. Try and get the owner to authorise a change in ownership."

The new forum will probably use  phpBB3 rather than the current phpBB2. The information  below may be useful in future, though we need do nothing at this time:

Quote:
Go into your admin control panel. Then click on the link for 'forum owners control panel' and log in there.

Under the 'Phpbb3/Phbbb2' tab, you should see an option to "Create/upgrade a phpbb3 version of your forum."

Click on this and follow the instructions through. If all goes well, you will now see two links in the forum owners control
panel - one for your existing phpBB2 forum and the other for a phpBB3 version of it. Dont panic here - your phpBB2 forum
is still the default version your users will see.

At the bottom of the forum owners control panel page you'll see something like this:

phpbb3 forum link: http://{your.forum}.wonko3.myfastforum.org
phpbb2 forum link: http://{your.forum}.wonko.myfastforum.org

If you click on the link to the phpBB3 version it will take you to a basic version of your forum in phpBB3. You can then
login as admin and begin the process of altering templates, forum colours, etc. This is the bit that will take the most
time. The good news is, there's plenty of help for simple problems on phpBB3 on Google.

When you've finalised editing, then you return to the 'forum owners control panel' and select 'Make forum link' phpBB3
from the dropdown box. That'll set your forum to be phpBB3 by default.

Sorry i cant get excited about technical things but will certainly contribute with any funds required. Id like to keep the existing stuff because when we get back into the Prem and are once again Champions of Europe it will be interesting to read about the dark days on here. Not only that there is some good reference stuff about books, places music etc. Great work PM and Heyho though, thanks for getting into it for us

Maybe not.

I'm having a six month Reg sabbatical. It's getting tedious logging in and finding no new posts day after day. Starting to wonder what the point of the forum is. Shall we predict what we will be talking about when Dock returns in 6 months. The middle of the winter, terrible snow and Leeds knocked out of the FA Cup by non league minnows York City. Whilst languishing in mid table mediocracy.

Nothing changes does it
Late Doors

I know what Dock means though, I keep meaning to put up something about our Canada- States trip and a couple of gigs I've been to recently but I can't muster the enthusiasm. It's a self defeating action though, not posting. I guess it's just that kind of place now, an occasional drop in centre. Shame but if we want it to change we should all post more frequently. Doesn't help with getting critical errors when trying to log on or strange messages  when I tried to post a week or so ago though.
