We went Down to the River

But into it we did not dive. The River Trent on the Derby/Leicestershire border south of Derby just outside Castle Donnington.

I've always loved Rivers. The sea bores me but a gliding rippling gushing river is a thing of beauty along with everything connected to it. We only have a couple of minor rivers here in the Hudd. The Colne and Holme eventually join and meet the bigger Calder East of town towards Mirfield as it rolls towards Wakefield. All three are lovely in their own way but not like the major rivers in North and East Yorks. Or indeed the River Trent, synonymous with Nottingham Forest and Cricket for me but so much more to it.

Our Hotel, The Old Priest House picked up on one of those bargain midweek deals lay on the banks of it West of Nottingham as it meandered smoothly towards the City. There is no way on Earth we would be stopping in these kind of places if it wasn't for the deals. Coffees 3.50 each kind of place. Immaculate, well run and spacious. The kind of places companies send their executives to. The food was amazing and I had the best fillet steak I've ever had. Oh man it was a melt in the mouth succulent beef bonanza. The full English Breakfast top drawer as well. Unfortunately the advertised local craft brews were not to be found.

The real beauty of the place was its location, Quintessential English Riverside but the tranquillity is frequently penetrated by the distance whiny roar of Donnington race track and aeroplanes angling over from nearby East Mids airport. Both seemed to add to the drama of the place though.

The nearest village town was Castle Donnington itself. Quite picturesque seemingly in love with hairdressers  and curry houses. Better than bookies and pound shops we thought. Tried one pub, the Jolly something which was anything but Jolly. The landlord looked me up and down indifferently and the smattering of locals just carried on Effing and Jeffing around the bar as we took our first and last drink there to the seats and laughed it off.

The other place was a micro bar called the Chequered Flag. Much better, chattier, friendly and a smattering of decent local  ales on tap.

The surrounding smaller villages clustered along the Trent and Midland Canal were much more genteel  as was Ashby De La Zouch the latter would have made a better town stop than Castle Donnington if it wasn't for our Hotel and its location. Nonetheless a nice little midweek trip and back just in time for the last home game of the season.

Love lakes, streams, rivers and sea. Often have a spiritual experience when I have the time to ponder the beauty of nature.

Do enjoy a river/canal walk missen, several decent ones around here.

The whole country is blessed with many ace waterways. I like what's under the sea and I like the sea shore but the actual Sea leaves me a bit indifferent. Any water side location will do for me but there is something about a river. The constant natural movements its been making for maybe thousands of years. Their impact on all other life around them and when they get angry you'd better watch out man so we need to stop fucking them about, rapid. They smell beautiful as well, especially on a morning

We live near the River Severn now. It's a beautiful place to go for a walk - particularly in the evening. Lots of bats and owls (and a few midges). I will post some pics presently.

Ace,  let me know how you do it please. I cant seem to post them anymore through a hosting site. I think PM once told me how to do it but i cant find where.

Cheers but that sounds dodgy. doesn't it open up your computer to unwanted attention ?

I don't think it's any more dodgy than uploading to any file-sharing site.

Is it any more risky than letting the site have access to your computer to upload a message?

Perhaps heyho could advise?

Hmm, s'pose so. C'mon H, as the resident IT man time to shine

I suspect Mr H has matters of a more demanding matter to deal with right now.

I was thinking that yesterday.
