Watchmen

Was told by people I once trusted that this was good. A graphic novel no less, not a comic. What a load of old shite. Anyone else read it? Anyone impressed by it? What am I missing? Didn't even seem as good as comics of old.

Not a massive fan of the artwork but I think the story is brulliant.  Trouble is, I for one hoped a 'graphic novel' would be high quality because of the artwork first and foremost.

The film's sound imho.

From Hell is v good graphic novel, I've got Road To Perdition too somewhere.

Hi Cuts, Mr. Codger did a thread on this Graphic Novel business a while ago. Ta for posting about your experience with one of them. Don't think I wil bother with Watchmen after your review.

Here's the aforementioned thread:

Enjoyed the book - not so much the plot or the artwork, but Alan Moore's prose. He's clearly very angry about something.

He also writes in a short staccato style. I don't like books with sentences half a page long, where you get to the end and can't remember what the beginning was. So it suits me.

Film was a bit disappointing though.

I wrote something once, in short staccato sentences, it was meant to convey urgency, I got crucified for it. I like writers who strip away not embellish, in general.

Micheal Chabon, who I used to love has gone all wanky, his latest novel has a 12 page sentence in it.

I'm not above comics, I'm reading a history of Marvel now, but this Watchmen stuff just past me by completely.
