Walter Swinburn R.I.P.

Died yesterday aged 55. Great jockey and one of the elite that has won more than one Derby. Firstly on Shergar in 81' and then later with Shahrastani and Lamtarra. One of the best! 55? WTF!

Love life because you never know when it's going to be over! R.I.P.

That's a short life and no mistake.

RIP Walter.

yeah, read it in the news, tragic. He was a staple on my Yankee in my betting to releive the boredom days. Terrific jockey.

All that dieting can't be good for you long term. Having to keep below your natural weight. Same with boxers.

Too right. Not good physically or psychologically. There is a difference in weight expectations between jumps and flat jockeys, both are tough games but on the flat you aren't competitive unless you can regularly do 9st or under. So basically you live a huge chunk of your professional life (approx twenty years) being 2st lighter than is medically recommended for adult males. Some groundbreaking work being done on jockey physiology and diet at Liverpool John Moores University in the last couple of years, which is thankfully filtering down to the lads who have to meet the race weight recommendations day in day out.
