v Burton Albion

My first (and last) away game of the season. The day started well enough. A 9am pint in the Plantation and then and 80 minute journey in the sun to Ilkeston. A town obviously ravaged by pity closures it offered very cheap beer - indeed the Wetherspoons was the dearest pub!

Then off to the ground. I thought we'd parked up outside a cash and carry warehouse but no it was the 7,000 capacity. So another pint and a burger - is Burton the only ground in the country that sells faggots and even double faggots!!! - and then of into the stand. YES!!!!! it was standing. I'd forgotten what it was like for someone behind me to shout in my ear, fucking hell mate how tall are you.

A special mention also to the knob head in the queue for the burgers. He helped himself to two pies only to give the young lass who was serving a rollocking because they were not served the right way like they do in Leeds.

Anyway on to the game. Deja Vous maybe. Another inept and light weight display by the midfield. Phillips is raw and hungry and needs a father figure to help him. Same with Viera. A couple of potentials there just lacking leadership on the pitch to help and protect them. Roofe needs to grow some bollocks and be prepared to use them to score goals. And Hernandez can fuck off for me. No time to hide over the past few weeks like he has done.

The defence is generally sound and we do have 50% of an attack. So what has gone wrong. Teams have sussed us out. Muscle Wood out of the game and get up em in midfield. But a good central midfielder leader would have been able to capitalise on the extra marking that Wood gets and use that extra bit of space to put the youngsters through.

Very frustrating really. I know they are not easy to come about but a good 30+'ish midfielder in the transfer windows in January and we would have been in the play off.

Anyway off we trundled home. Called at the offie on the way back for 4 cans of Holsten Pils and and rather smelly cheese and onion sarnie and I was back home for 7:15

Well we are Leeds aren't we.

'kin'l , how did you get a ticket? This is the only thing ive read about the game and sounds like its just a carry on from the last few games. Yep our midfield and wide goal scoring potential is zero. Great keeper, CH's, fullbacks and a CF carrying us all. I dont think he gets muscled about H. He just gets very little support around him. cheers anyway

The midfield have grown complacent of Woods scoring abilities. Tight mark him and you can put him out of the game without anyone capitalising on a little extra space. They need guidance and/or a kick up the arse.

Not been impressed with Phillips. One good game, then two bad ones.

I'm loathe to criticise Monk in any way for working miracles with this set of players but why oh why is O'Kane overlooked? Decent give and go ability, can spray a long pass and decent at covering. No surprise we've fallen short at the business end but it's been a season beyond our wildest dreams. Loads to build on if we can retain the key players and bring Bartley in permanently.

And making Bridcutt captain. Firstly he is another lightweight player and secondly he is always 'supposedly' injured.

He should have made Bartley captain - that man oozes confidence and you can tell that his fellow team members respect him.

Trouble is next year is going to be a lot harder than this. Aside of the top 2 it has been a very average league this year (probably why Leeds have 'over achieved' based on pre season pessimism) but next year you are going to have the usual 1 place taken up by a team getting relegated and the likes of Villa, Derby, Norwich, Ipswich plus one or two of the play off losers knocking on a top 6 position.

But as you say the key is to keep hold of players and bring in experience. It's not going to happen but my dream would be to bring Milner back at his favoured midfield. Once again we couldn't afford it but I'd try and lure Terry as well!!!

Simple, replace the whole midfield.
