The Truth about Sports products

Interesting Panorama tonight. Investigating some of the wilder claims made by the manufacturers of hydration products, supplements and trainers and the way they are marketed. Many are given credibility by prominent athletes who should know better.

Hydration products - don't bother. drink water when you need it
supplements - don't bother - just eat a healthy diet
trainers - buy something cheap and comfortable

My pre-race preparation - a cup of tea and a couple of biscuits. Maybe a kitkat or a twix, or a banana if i'm feeling healthy.

From memory, water is not efficiently absorbed on its own. You need sugar/ salts to improve absorption and thereby avoid dehydration. A cheap and cheerful recipe is 6 teaspoons of sugar and 1/2 a teaspoon of salt in 1 litre of water. It's not perfect in cases of extreme dehydration, but will suffice in the short term.

There will be some science fact in it for sure but for normal people in normal circumstances doing normal sports water and good appropriate food is all you need, There is nothing funnier than seeing a dad give his kid some rainbow coloured plastic bottle of "Beckhamade" he's just pulled out of the back of his 4 x4 at half time.
