The Rugby League Challenge Cup Final

Ok not everyones cup of tea but this Saturday is a massive day for me and my mates. We’ve been to every final for the weekend since Leeds- Saints in 78. Back in January I threw the towel in and said I wasn’t going down for the weekend. Bloody Giants have only gone and got there haven’t they. Any way so im going down on the train Saturday morning and meeting up with them.

I’ve followed Fartown (Huddersfield RL) or more recently the Giants as long as Ive followed the mighty whites albeit with not as much gusto. Since Mrs Doors came along one had to go and it sure wasn’t going to be LUFC so I’ve restricted the games to only a handful a year  but they are still my team.

Anyway we’re playing Warrington on Saturday in the final and it should be a cracking game with two very evenly matched sides who both should fancy it. I cant wait, its massive for us if you can imagine it. We’ve been a shit small club for years but under the guidance and investment of our brilliant chairman Ken Davey we are on the brink of being an established top class outfit.

Can you. Good people of Reg spare a thought for us on the day before and after the game ?

A couple of the best times EVER have been at the RL Challenge Cup Final. Beer for breakfast on the train down, ransacking hotel rooms and measuring up completely to a southerner's pre-conceptions of drunken northerners.

I think it was 1983 (Featherstone won it) and a spot of bother with Kevin Dick, a fire extinguisher and a mannequin liberated from Harrods.
Foo Whiter

Good luck LD hope fartown do it for you & Yorkshire of course.
Late Doors

Cheers Foo.
Yeah Kevin Dick. We had him at Fartown for a year back end of his career. Him and his mates stopped in the same hotel as us one year in Kensington (not 83). Enough said i think.
Mick McCann

Fantastic LD, dead chuffed for you, followed the Saints game on the radio. Brilliant that the order of things has been shaken up.

Have I mentioned more than 10 times that one year my eldest did a hat-trick of finals, 2 Leeds RL and us versus Watford. 3 finals 3 defeats, traumatised is not the word.

Have a great day.
Late Doors

Ta Mick. Met a couple from Crossgates in the Caribbean at the cricket, coincidentally he sits about 25 seats to my right in the kop as well. Hes also a big Rhinos fan  and he is still traumatised by that season, flashbacks, the lot

There’s a lot to be said for the salary capping they have in RL makes for a more competitive interesting season. Give me a super League game on telly on a Friday Night any time than some Blackburn V Sunderland crap
Pond Life

Have a great one LD, already looking forward to the report.
Tank Girl

we will be cheering with you in spirit LD
Sir Bulldog Craggwood

Good luck Giants!!
sheeps

Good luck.

Bring it back to Yorkshire. I shall be tuning in to support em.

i can't sleep i am beside myself with excitement. We are going to do it. Y’know that feeling we get as Leeds United fans at a big game. Try to imagine something opposite to that.

I keep coming back with an Error 404 LD

Doesn't seem to compute.

Have a good one.

Feck Off you mangy mongrel!

Yeah Soz t’b. was a bit rude that but Sheeps is spot on. Ive come round now but that was a real sickener.

Yeah it was a lively old interesting day out but tarnished with the bitter disappointment of our team letting us and more importantly themselves, the coach and Ken D down. In the last twenty years we’ve gone from average crowds of about 350 to a fairly healthy but still not acceptably high. There’s lots of casual interest in the town but its difficult to get people down on a regular basis. The impetus had been lost after decades of utter shite.

The fans we have now are a different breed to traditional established big clubs like yer Rhinos, saints and indeed Warrington. Lots of kids, women and families. Don’t get me wrong that is ace and it leads to a relaxed fun day out at the games but doesn’t do a lot for the atmosphere with hardly any singing. A win on Saturday or the very least a credible exciting performance would have done wonders to address that. Im sure enough casual curious fans just going for a day out will come back at least recognising what we have now and get to the games a little more often but I think we wasted a great opportunity.

As for my own day out, yeah its always a good craic at the RL Final. Like I said earlier this is the first time I haven’t been for the weekend since 1978.  Got to Hudders Staion at 7.30 to see two of the Hudders Whites there setting off for Colchester. I Got a load of stick from them of course for not going to Colchester. They soon shut it though when they had a look around. It was magic to see all the people about the town in Claret and Gold waiting for the coaches and coming to the station.

My mates went down Friday Morning like we always do and had a Day/night out round Camden. The message I was getting was that they were all bolloxed and been involved in some incidents of the middle aged Northern women kind the night before.

They were stopping in Kings X so we arranged to meet at Mcglynns just off Argyle St across from Kings X. What a great little pub set in an oasis of tranquillity not much more than a stones throw from Kings X. They’d hooked up with a Warrington fan who was also a Leeds United fan together with a bunch of Leeds Lads on a trip from Cleck. A veritable Caroli of Comedians. My Man U mate was thrilled when they found out he was a scum fan. Took it well though and it was all a good laugh.

I really wanted to see the build up and certainly the kick off which is very unusual for these trips so we set off and were in the ground for 2.20. As expected there was more Wire than Fartown but I was pleased with what we brought.

Well we couldn’t have had a worse start. Left it to the last tackle of the first set to kick, got charged down and bang 6-0 down. We still kept our no thrills organised routine game going which has served us so well this year and by rights should have been good enough to beet Warrington. It was not to be though. We had a few unfortunate decisions not go our way but any one hanging their hat on that is fooling themselves. Warrington sensed our uncertainty and stage fright and lept up a gear. We couldn’t get out of first.

Half time came and I had a good look around the bar areas. Thousands of claret and Gold clad faces. Loads of people I knew from Football. Work, Town, pubs and all of us still confident we could get better and get back in the game and even go on to win it. Even the Hudders Town fans I knew down there were having a good craic despite the animosity between the two sets of fans that’s has crept into the town. Not all of em but enough of the silly ignorant dog shagging idiots to create tension. Warrington have a reputation for tiring and we were all sure our solid team ethic would see us through.

Nothing of the sort I’m afraid, we got worse Warrington got better. It was dire. Game was over after 65 minutes and the last 15 were seen out in silence and my head in my hands most of the time. Tremendously disappointing. We were back in Mcglynns for 5 o clock. Half the Leeds Lads were still there not even venturing to the game and by now were in full flow doing a very decent Brian Cough impressions and a passable Frank Carson to the landlord who was more Carson than the man himself. The Warrington lad came back, The laughs got louder, the landlord brought a load of chips and Buttered bread out and the world got a little brighter.

We had a few more bevies round the Kings X area and found a boozer showing the scum arse game. Full of Arsenal fans as you’d expect I suppose round that area. My man u mate was a bit sheepish but couldn’t contain himself when they disallowed that last goal. Luckilly the rest of our collective anti scum outrage rescued us I think.

I was back on the eight o clock last train out of Kings X To Leeds and a kind of despondency set in. Id got a pack of Guiness in and got in one of those reflective moods you get now and then. To make matters worse this fecking huge Asian type fella sat next to me and his big frame spilled all over the place as he opened up a tray of the smelliest food imaginable, Fecking great I thought.

Then a sudden impulse came over me and I started talking to him. Turns out he was a Saudi Business man and we had a really good chat for an hour and a half, very interesting. He could hardly speak English and my Saudi is not what it used to be but by a combination of his and my endeavour and patience with each other we had a fantastic journey.

Culturally we couldn’t have been more opposite but we seemed to enjoy each others company and talked about all sorts, religion, business, war, terror, racism, football the lot. I was open and honest with him about what I saw as religious oppression and he was to me about his perspective on things. Turns out we have a lot of things in common politically, morally and socially.  I asked him if he was coming up to Leeds to buy Leeds United as a representative for someone and he just smiled and shook his head. Anyway it was a positive end to a disappointing day and certainly a lesson for me anyway about all sorts of things.
Pond Life

Oh dear, that is a long journey for a game like that. Sorry the game didn't go your way.

Great report and nice that the journey home proved to be interesting for all the good reasons. I love talking to strangers me.

Thanks for posting LD.

Great report LD, i wanted you to win but thought T'Wire would only due to Tony Smiths big game experience. There seemed some weird calls from the video ref, tries that probably would of been given on any Friday or Saturday night. The big game experience won't do you any harm for the play offs IMHO.

The Wire should be no opposition now as they'll probably be on the piss for the rest of the year after winning. As a Rhino's fan i don't fancy us to do it this year but then again i didn't last year. As long as it comes to Yorkshire i don't mind who win's it. Well maybe not a Hull side.
sheeps

Ta for that LD, painted the usual picture.

Is your new mate gonna join us, you must have mentioned it.
Tank Girl

i love that you asked him if he was going to negotiate a deal to buy leeds utd.
Late Doors

Yeah, in for a penny in for a pound i thought. Cant remember Sheeps if i mentioned this site but its likely. We had a right old chat
