Butts

The Riding House Cafe, London

As part of our long weekend in the capital I'd had my eye on this place since reading a glowing review in The Guardian. Quite new it proved awkward to get a table once the First Lord and Lady of Reg had confirmed their availability to join us the Monday evening just gone.

I'm not sure where it is, we got there via Great Portland Street and returned via Oxford Circus, but it's in a relatively quiet street near Regents Park. The noise and bustle when you enter, however, tells you immediately that this is a hot ticket. I was helping the vertically challenged Mrs Butts onto a high bar stool when Lol and TG arrived bang on time so we sat down instead and met our charming waitress who explained the menu - a set of smaller tapas style dishes if that's what you want or you can do, as we did, and opt for a conventional starter/ main course.

The menu is below and it was excellent from start to finish. I thought the belly pork which Lol and I had was a bit under-seasoned but the crackling was top notch. Mrs B and I shared a whole sea bass for a main which the highly likeable waitress took off the bone for us. It came with a nero (squid ink) sauce which was, as you might expect, thick and black and very fishy - I loved it, Mrs B nearly vomited. The chips were very good though. TG went for the trout and Lol had the lamb, which looked gorgeously pink.

There must have been something in the air as Mrs B and I shared a gorgeous apricot and almond frangipane tart and custard, TG had the gingerbread and Lol the chocolate option.

Despite eating non stop for two days this was a fine meal and exceptionally interesting reastaurant with a large bar area for informal dining looking onto an open plan kitchen.

Two hours sped past and the conversation ranged from Berlin, sweet tooths, Lol's amazing shirt, the recent Regfest and, of course, Twitter.

We got back to the hotel and were asleep by 11, our stomachs groaning. Can't wait to go back though.

Sounds good, nice uncomplicated menu too.
