The New World Cup

If the World Cup were to be simply arranged as a giant knockout competition, with balls blindly pulled out of a bag for each of the 196 countries (at least that's the number according to Wikipedia when I just looked!) and games played on a single basis (i.e. they must end with penalties in the event of a draw)............

1) How many matches are needed to determine the winning team?

Additionally, assuming the final team in any odd-numbered bag is given a bye through to the next round............

2) How many rounds of matches would be needed?

3) What's the minimum number of games a team might have to play in order to win the competition?

Might not be a bad competition - are you reading this FIFA?

* Probably not. *
Forest

Is it

1. 195 matches
2. 8 rounds
3. 4 matches having byes in 4 rounds, probably Germany?

If there's 196 teams then you can't run a straight knockout competition.

You fail after the 2nd round when you're left with 49 teams.

It could probably be more interesting than the real one though...........

Wouldn't it be more sensible to give 60 teams a bye into round 2; the remaining 136 would play in round 1, to provide 68 teams to go forward into round 2.

There would then be no need for any byes in subsequent rounds, thereby eliminating the risk of Germany having more than one bye in the tournament.

A good idea, if only to wear down Herman Hun as he goosesteps to the final against Kraplakistan.

As a form of tournament, there's no reason why it couldn't be held every year - it could possibly be used in place of these frickin' friendly games.

Obviously there's no chance of it ever happening.

Thats how I got my answers*, so really I wasn't wrong there are two answers to this question.

I think you forgot to add on the additional 68 games for round one; it also means (by my calculation, anyway) that there would be a total of 9 rounds and the Krauts would have to play in a minimum of 8 of them.

I really like the idea of byes - especially as you get near the later rounds - as it would help foster the true spirit of jingoistic nationalism in the face of perceived injustice.

There's just not enough of that in the world today.
