The new Alf Tupper? One of my neighbours is on the staff at Coventry City (nailed on certainty for relegation he reckons).
He was telling me about a young lad they have in their academy. His name is Gael Bigirimana. He's 17 and his family are refugees from Burundi, who came to the country about three years ago.
He turned up at the Academy training ground a couple of months ago when he'd finished his exams and asked if he could play for the youth team.
Gregor Rioch, the youth team coach probably had a bit of a quiet chuckle, but nevertheless told him he would have to go to the main training ground to register etc - expecting never to see him again.
So the lad ran from one to the other (about 5 miles), introduced himself to one of the staff there and asked if he could play for them.
He was told (politely) to go away. He stood around for a while and watched the team training then started to run back to Coventry.
Manager Andy Thorn just happened to come out onto the pitch as Gael was disappearing into the distance.
When he was told what had happened, he drove off up the A423, caught up with him, took him back to the training ground and signed him up.
He went straight into the Youth team and is now getting rave reviews.
Nice to hear stories like this. Hope it has a happy ending.
