The Hunger Games

At The Grindstress' insistence I read this the other week and am a little bemused by the hype.

It's obviously okay in a preteen lit kind of way and I have to acknowledge that it does chug along at a brisk beach reading pace, but to a wholly predictable conclusion.

To my mind, it seems to be a slightly altered version of stories (or films) I've read or seen before and the not-so-subtle social commentaries and/or allusions of the plot and characters don't strike me as either clever or revealing.

So, am I missing something blindingly obvious (perhaps the two following books are better), or is it simply the latest bobbins du jour?

From what I have read Ginder it seems a bit of a marmite situation for people who have read it. They either love it or hate it. I have steered clear of it as it seems to have attracted the Harry Potter crowd (adults who like to read books, as long as they are childrens books). The same crowd who only go for a book just cos' its a bestseller/already a blockbuster movie, and which in a lot of cases ends up being the bobbins du jour you alluded to. I'm out on this one and won't be wasting my time with it. Ta for the heads up n' that!

To be fair to the author, they probably wrote something they were comfortable with and the stuff that's happened since is as much news to them as to everyone else.

It wasn't the worst book I've ever read, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to anyone much older than fourteen.

Next up for me is "The Hitman's Guide to Housecleaning" by Hallgrimur Helgason.

I'm guessing it might be a bit similar in style to The Russian Debutante's Handbook, but may be proved wrong.

Good luck to the writer I say. I'm sure they have done very nicely out of it. I think if anybody has a success with a book then they deserve everything that goes with it.

Had these reccommended to me and can confirm they're shit.

I get stuff like this stuck under my nose all the time,'Dad you've got to read this...' Eragon, Artimus Fowl, Harry Potter, Hunger Games. All that stuff is shite but it's cool 'cause the kids are reading.
bearing

Hey, if it gets the kids reading who cares.

I got dragged along against my will to see the second film.

Bobbins.
