Late Doors

The Glass Menagerie. WY Playhouse.

Tennessee Williams' First play i think, about an ageing former southern belle left alone by her dashing but galavanting husband to bring up the two children. The daughter  is painfully shy and handicapped by a gammy leg. The son feels trapped in a dead end job and domestic prison. He invites his work colleague around for tea but the mother sees beyond tea to a potential son in law.

Fantastic script and Greta Scacchi as the mother is fabulously mad. It isn't the most spectacular plays though. Just four characters, bare minimalist set and precious little physical energy. Very cerebral though with rapid dialogue and therefore quite riveting but as i read in the guardian, it could easily have been a brilliant radio play.

Was it as sweaty as Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof? That for me is probably the most sweaty film I've ever seen, after Cool Hand Luke of course.

My top 5
1. Cool Hand Luke
2. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
3. City of God
4. 12 Angry Men
5. Alien

Good choice. Prison films a generally sweaty, and films with submarines in.
