The Big Painting Challenge

Great idea from the BBC. Like a Great British bake off for amateur artists. On Sundays at 6pm. Not too impressed with the first one though, Una Stubbs hosting  with two bland judges and very ordinary artists. Might get better but a great idea anyways.

Yeah I watched it, enjoyed it but that's cos I'm refined I am.

The artists' previous work which no doubt helped them get on the programme in the first place, looked universally ace I thought.  Blimey, they soon lost their talent in the challenge!  Good though, overall.

Once upon a more innocent time this sort of subject brought to my mind Paint Along with Nancy and the motherly Nancy Kominsky

Now what?

I just did the whole of our bedroom white. Was a challenge as it was a dark greyey brown before. Took three coats of crown to cover it.

Now you know how Michaelangelo felt.

I might watch this but not if they are painting bowls of fruit. My mum used to do that.

Watched a programme about Picasso last night. He was pretty good.

Well i thoroughly enjoyed that but what exactly were Unna Stubbs and that other host contributing. She's wetter than a haddocks bathing costume as Black Adder would say.

Big room for follow on series i would've thought but equally lots of scope for improving the script. I liked the judges, occasionally harsh but honest and fair. Had to laugh in the final when the male judge was reading all sorts of things in the Scottish lad's painting. The lad had a face that just screamed, " well if that's what you think you pretentious berk I'll have it i suppose"

Got to say that the overall quality wasn't as good as i was expecting. I bet that's one thing that will improve massively in the next series. Hope they give some kind of  better technical guidance as well. In fact more like Master Chef all round in terms of format.

Yes, totally agree, enjoyed it and I was hoping the Scot would win it as he seemed to have most 'orthodox' talent than the rest, except for the student who was a lovely girl and is doing really well anyway, studying art at Oxford, I think I heard said.  I actually quite like Una Stubbs and she's quite an artist too, but she and Bacon were a bit wishy washy weren't they?

Overall, the artists' quality possibly leaves millions of us thinking I can do that, and better!  Maybe that's the point?

I preferred that attractive birds paintings. Wasn't happy about all this speed painting thing. I'm sure Turner and the likes were never told get a move on lad.

I thought the quarter she finished was brilliant
Frazier Cranium

Good point, I agree, and what the feck is speed in ART?

I knew she wouldnt win anyway, but when she did that abstract rectangle it was clear she'd blown her chances.

She will get a career in art, most of the others are past the opportunity I think, so it was good to see a talented bloke win it outright.

They've still not got this right. Great idea but chuff me what a bunch of bland non entities they have to host and present it. Hard to imagine anyone wetter and more superfluous than Una Stubbs but they've managed it with the Rev Coles. That mentor with the red boiler suit has also managed to be even more annoying than him purely on looks although he does seem to know what he is talking about. The other mentor is good though, very involved with the contestants. Of the three judges only Lachlan Goudie has any charm or presence. That Dr fella just spouts platitudes and the women although obviously knowledgeable inspires nothing
