The Ashes down under

Getting myself geared up for some all night sessions by following he hugely entertaining Aggers and Bumble on Twitter.

The Aussies are shit at the moment and we are shit hot so we should get some high octane confrontations with Ponting like a wounded animal who doesn't want to become the first captain to lose the Ashes three times.

It's cricket, by the way.
Carp

From the little I know, the Aussies are never rubbish against England. Also read that we are short on bowlers and asking a lot from them over the tour. This because we loaded the squad with good bats?

No we've got the best spinner in the world at the moment (Swann) and, if they're fit three of the best 5 or 6 pacemen in the world (Broad, Anderson, Finn). If anything, the batting looks a bit suspect (Cook, Collingwood) and Pietersen hasn't scored runs for nearly a year now.

You're right though, they will come out fighting and form won;t really matter if they get the upper hand in Perth.
Seal

Butts you have titled your thread with a sentence ending in two prepostions.  *hides*
Butts

Maybe. I would say 'under' is a noun in this instance.
Seal

When's it all kick off then?
Butts

First test 25/11.
Seal

You kicked this thread off nice and early then! Nowt like being prepared.
Butts

They play Western Australia this week.
Butts

The sledging has started.

Here we go. Won the toss - batting.

Sir Bulldog Craggwood

absolutely marvellous Aggers!

I shall give it a full hour of my attention before I inevitably slump into unconciousness on the sofa anethaetised by this rather excellent Pinot Grigio
grunt

 Fuck!
Sir Bulldog Craggwood

FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCK!!!!!!

Strauss gone for FUCK ALL!!! First over!

WTF?!?!?!?
Butts

I'd put my mortgage on Trott, the nearest we've come to a Boycs.
Sir Bulldog Craggwood

they are chucking a lot of unidentified powder on the outfield
Butts

There is something I intensely dislike about Johnson, maybe the fact that he's sees himself as the new Thommo when he's not fit or quick enough to lick the great man's corked hat.
Butts

The Aussies are going to struggle with this bowling. This is the best they've got and in some of the most favourable conditions of the whole series.

I've just defaulted, silly cunt.

yes, can you make some equally foolhardy predictions for the Australians please
Butts

At least Bollinger isn't playing for them - an obvious candidate for Jonners' champagne moment.
Butts

DROPPED! By the ridiculously named debutante Xavier. Ha!!
NotSoSuperStripe

come on england
lebowski

Siddle hat trick - on his 26th birthday.
Fin

Bell out!

Eng 254 -9.
lebowski

260 all out.
Fin

260 All out.
Butts

This was never going to be straighforward. The Gabba doesn't do draws, we will prob go one down after that, needed 400 at least.
NotSoSuperStripe

Pitch looks perfect for Swann, was breaking up already, cloud should suit Anderson, we may do oaky yet
Pond Life

Any cake?
Butts

Dull stuff at the moment, may have to go to bed at lunch if we don't get at them soon. Swanny on soon no doubt. Just had a pork pie.
Butts

Finn is shit (not you Fin)

is that the finn who ripped a couple of out minutes after your post?
Butts

It is, I take it all back, his C&B was just the confidence booster he needed. How much of cricket played in the head? 90%, maybe more.
Pond Life

I expect he read the post and bucked his ideas up.
Butts

THat fucker Hussey was out, umpire bottled it, twat.
Butts

Is there an uglier cricketer on the planet than Brad Haddin?
Butts

3 and a half hours without a wicket, Jesus this has been grim.
Late Doors

Just catching the last session here, must have been a long night Butts, hats off for the endurance. Hope our batters can show the same.

He's no Gladstone Small i'll give you that.

Enlivened by following Aggers on Twitter - really adds another dimension to the usual commentary. Anderson will bowl 100 times poorer and take 5 wickets, absolutely no luck and the umpires bottled it. When Dar got the first Hussey lb wrong he was afraid to give the next two out and as England had no reviews left it wasn't referred - both absolutely stone dead plumb. Should be no surprise the Aussies never lose at the Gabba and I fear it could be over by tea.

1 down for 309

Quote from Shane Watson - "We had a pretty solid day."
bearing

Pretty solid is an understatement, what chance the draw?
grunt

bearing wrote:

That quote is from an aussie player t'b. A draw is favourite I reckon, though we can always balls these things up.
Butts

This was incredible, especially when Johnson put Strauss down on 69. One of the camera angles showed him looking at his feet as the ball came towards him, not concentrating. No wickets, a duck and a dropped catch - and he's Australia's so-called 'lethal weapon'. The sledging that was going on was X rated, apparently.

six-for Finn you mean?

I've been watching bits through snatched sleep. I leave the laptop tuned into Sky by the bed, when a baby wakes up, I pick her up comfort her and slip in one of my headphones to listen to the commentary!

Great effort yesterday. I'd like to see us consolidate in the morning, smash it like a 20 20 in the afternoon and given the aussies a session with about 300 to get. I reckon Swann would relish that. Unlikely for us to win but I think we could give it a damn good go!

I've recanted over Finn, I think he's a world beater now.

It'd be nice indeed to have them down a few at the end. When we got away with a draw in Cardiff last year it set us up for the series like it was a win.
Late Doors

Can't remember ever been as proud of an England team but we still have a lot of graft to put in to rescue this game. As with Leeds Utd you can't take anything for granted with an England Cricket  team
Carp

Need to be thinking about batting out the day. A collapse is always possible where England are concerned
Carp

Butts

Difference this time is the Aussies have an uncharacteristically soft underbelly. Just listened to the Boycs and Aggers podcast and they are scathing about Ponting's captaincy - three/four fielders in the deep with a 200+ lead.
Late Doors

Could be a big day for Colly and KP, If they get a chance to bat that is

Astounding turnaround !

Are the highlights on normal telly?

Not a ckt man but really enjoy the highlights of stuff like this and I'm missing it.

Cheers Butts.

Like mi'bitch will allow that.
NotSoSuperStripe

We're effectively 80 for 1 with the rest of the batters all having points to prove, the Aussies on the backfoot and with an attack that looks powder puff on a pitch that is flat as they come, why the negativity?

As long as we can add another 90 runs in the morning with only losing one/two more, we should go for it, I say...

Can you imagine the Aussies of a couple of years ago in the same situation? They wouldnt be playing for a draw, I can tell you.
Late Doors

don't think for a minute it will happen but when you've followed them since 1974 you take nothing for granted
Sir Bulldog Craggwood

I'm positive - theyve all done great to put the first innings behind them. Win lose or draw this one theyve done well. I hope they go for it - will certainly set up the series as a cracker if they win the first test
lebowski

It will probably be a draw but psychologically is a good blow for us given the aussies must have believed they'd won this one.
NotSoSuperStripe

I think this England team is made of sterner stuff than some in the past... whenever they've been up against it, they've bounced back and done well... up to the 2005 Ashes, we'd have given up mentally if we'd conceded a 200 run first innings lead to the Aussies yet here we've turned it all around
Butts

Yes, and we've ended up with the best captain after the Pietersen business. A captain whose batting form isn't affected by the captaincy. The biggest factor has to be Andy Flower - he knows what he wants and goes about it with a great deal of steel.
Butts

I'm hoping to be able to go to bed at lunch time.
Mick McCann

Right got this one sussed we need to smack the ball really hard with the bat, right, and if you don't make it go dead high it's best along the ground.
Butts

Mick McCann wrote:

Not at the moment. We need to bat defensively for about three hours to ensure we can't lose the game and then have a bit of a go (from app 4am-5am) and then hope they collapse and we win. Unlikely but you never know. So far so good, we're over 100 ahead now.
Butts

This is like a home match for England, no Aussies there, just the barmy army. Weird.
Butts

402-1 fucking hell, this is great.
Carp

Moving into cricket journalism next Mick?
Carp

513-1  Blimey. This is England batting?
Carp

517-1 Dec. Aus need 296 from 41.

katich gone, first wicket of day
Pond Life

As you may know there is a girl on twitter from the states with the tag @theashes, she awoke one morning to find she had 3000 new followers and thousands of questions about the cricket. After an initial shock and burst of anger she settled down, now Qantas are flying her out for free to watch the rest of the test
Butts

I called it a day at lunch once we were safe. Looking forward to seeing Ponting's miserable visage on the highlights later when he had his catch turned down.

Oh ye of little faith! Given it was so flat and becoming increasingly obvious that wickets were hard to come by, I almost wished we'd just batted on and let Cook and Trott plunder the record books. By the time we declared, they looked as though they bat with their eyes shut!
Butts

Bollinger in for Johnson appears to be the only likely change for Aus for Friday. Batsman unchanged.

Still a bit staggered, about us and how ordinary they are, especially in the field. So we've proved we can bat with them now lets start  bowling them out. I suspect that is where its going to be won, lost or drawn/won

a double     for now though. Spotted a few LUFC shorts in the crowd as usual. Dont normally approve of footy shirts at the cricket but away in far flung places its ok. What's others think ? i know a few of the elitist England fans and the BA dont like it.
Butts

I think I disapprove of football shirts anywhere but the field. I was looking for a Leeds presence but couldn't spot any, plenty of Man U. Adelaide is usually a
batter's paradise in which case we may need to wait until Perth where I fancy Broad and especially Finn to enjoy themselves.
Late Doors

There was one lad doing the four signal in the old Whyte n Mackay shirt with two gals at his side. Its a well known fact a Leeds Shirt is a pulling magnet all over the world

Aggers seems to think this may be happening.

Had a power nap that lasted for about 3 hours earlier so I'm aiming for tea at least.

OK Aus have won the toss and it's expected to get up to 35deg.
Butts

And Australia have brought in R Harris.

Butts

Unbelievable stuff. They have no batsman after 8.
NotSoSuperStripe

finns shit

I missed the best bit - Ponting and Haddin losing it with Strauss as they walked off. Ponting really is an objectionable little toe-rag.
lebowski

Great first day for us. Ponting unravelling at the seams  England in control

Fuck Sepp Blatter, who needs him ?
Butts

I'll settle for 350 for 4 or 5 at the end of day 2. Nice and steady.

Do you not think that you are slightly stating the obvious there mate ?
Butts

I get a bit worried that Strauss and Cook try and score too quickly. I prefer batsman to be boring, especially when the fielding team should be made to sweat it out in 40deg heat. I don't want us to try and rub their noses in it and end up with a lead of less than a hundred or so.
