The 2010 Epsom Derby 4.00PM Saturday (MCR)

Biggest British race in the flat season. Loads of Drama last week and this, and lots of upset punters who bet anti-post (betting before the horses are confirmed for the race, enabling them to get better odds) on the favorite St. Nicholas Abbey. The stable jockey for Aiden O' Brien's Ballydoyle stable, Johnny Murtagh (see avatar) would have had first pick of which horse he wanted to ride in The Derby, but last weekend was still undecided throwing betting exchanges into blind panic when he plumped for Jan Veermeer. Think I might stick with Ryan Moore on 'Workforce'. It won at Lingfield last week and the week before that he was a comfortable second at York to Capo Blanco which I was there to witness (and which I had a great little each way on). As with every Group 1 race though, they are all amazing horses and anything can happen. Full coverage on Beeb 1.

PS. Re: Betting anti-post. All I will say is never do it. I never have, and I never will.

Well spotted B, I'm just off to pawn the wifes jewellery.
That should be a decent wedge along with this months mortgage money.

Anyway, meeting Dock for a pint after the big race.

I'll give him a thumping if 'his tip' goes down.

I know it will be what you want.

Just looking at the Racing Post, and the runners for the Derby are tough to choose from. All week, I've been in a mantra "workforce workforce workforce", but looking at the form has sent me into a right tizz. I also have the added pressure of backing a winner in order to buy Sheeps some pints of pop in Wakefield afterwards (I've already received threatening texts). Considering Jamie Spencer on Coordinated Cut 20-1, Colm O'Donoghue on Midas Touch 6-1, or even Tom Quelly on Henry Cecils Bullet Train 7-1. I can't cope, I really can't.

It said on The Morning Line they were expecting a 150,000 crowd at Epsom. Coverage starts on BBC1 at 1.15pm. Runners and riders:

KIN' ELL ED, I REPEAT THESE ARE NOT TIPS, I REPEAT, NOT TIPS. I MAY STILL CHANGE MY MIND ON MY CHOICE. BACK YOU'RE OWN JUDGEMENT!

Michael Holding tipped workforce yesterday on TMS. I've stuck a fiver on it.
lebowski

That was sensational, how he chased the leader down , he absolutely creamed the lot of them, a course record.

Woohoo !!
Forest

If only Dock had tipped this we'd be all a few quid better off.

I went with Midas Touch.

I went over to meet Papa Dock (Wakey not Haiti) for a pint and to watch the race. He backed Workforce. But he only seriously considered it because I'd been banging on to him about how it could be a Derby contender since I saw it at York. Because of this factor he gave me half of his winnings (in three figures like)

Also had a nice 7-1 at Epsom with 'High Award'.

Leb, re: Michael Holding tip. Just wanted to get this straight, is it the cricket player? You'll take a tip from a bloke who can't even pick the right sport?  nono.gif

Back on topic:

A fantastic finish from Ryan Moore. Me n' PD were talking afterwards about how well he handled the race and how both of us considered his win on Snow Fairy in Fridays Oaks race as one of the best we've ever seen, and we got to thinking *sticks neck out* that Ryan Moore could be the next Lester Piggott. Which for any novices reading means that he could become the greatest jockey of all time. Only 26, and he's already been champion jockey three times. Ace!

FYI, Junior Dock, Michael Holding was a thoroughbred bowler if I've ever seen one, he was poetry in motion.

He is BIG into flat racing, so much so that he now lives next to the gallops in Newmarket during our summertime, he is an honorary member of some racing team or other and he was right. Thankfully.

I can't believe you didn't back it, you should never change your mind, and if you do, back 'em both !!

I'm off to Thirsk next week, got any tips ?

And, what a performance by workforce eh ?

I was thinking about Michael Holding. Sir Michael Stoute hails from Barbados or somewhere like that and is a big cricket fan and has a lot of connections in the Windies. I bet Stouty gave him the nod about Workforce. My earlier comment was more against cricket that Mr. Holding.

It was an amazing finish wasn't it. All the commentary was saying how Workforce was "inexperienced" and "would he be ready for such a big race". What a load of twaddle. When a trainer like Michael Stoute enters a horse in the Derby, he has every faith it'll win. The Oaks and the Derby. Two classics in two days. Amazing.

Re: Thirsk. Don't know who's running LebLeb, but keep an eye out for any horse of David 'Dandy' Nicholls stable especially if his son Adrian, or Paul Hanagan is riding it. The North Yorkshire courses are Nicholls home turf, and he tends to do well on them if he's got anything running.
