Totally different, John Barnes etc. came here as immigrants, went through our education system and the whole family integrated into British life.

It's yet another instance of peoples shallow expectations these day's. Lets have a team full of German, Italian and Eastern European players, won't it be great. Wonder if they might sing the English national anthem.
carp

He will play for Belgium I suspect. Couldn't play for England for 5 years even if he wanted to, and why would he?

Schooling rule.

Maybe it's time we started bending the rules. Half our cricket team is South African, The RU team is full of New Zealanders, Chris Froome is Kenyan, and you qualify for Wales if you spent a week on holiday in Tenby.

There was a time when you could only play for Yorkshire if you were born in Yorkshire, while other counties had taken a less parochial approach to recruitment. We kept getting our arses kicked and eventually had to move with the times.
carp

5 years from age of 18 would mean he couldn't play for England until he was 23.
Cutsyke

The Windsors?

I couldn't give a fuck about National teams, let them play women. I'm from Leeds.

Would you have an interest in a national team containing 5 or 6 continentals.

I'm still trying to come to terms with the great loss felt by Montseraat's national team that Michael Duberry never turned up for them.

England are still upset that they lost out on theat sex crazed chimpanzee Ryan Giggs.

Has anyone asked this little Belgian who HE would like to represent?

Giggs was born in England, chose to play for Wales through his parents, more his loss than ours.

What difference does it make who 'anyone' want's to play for? He's not ferking English by 1,000 country miles.

According to Radio 5 this morning, the lad's Dad is a Kosovan and it was speculated that it might be the Dad that has influenced the lad to hold out to play for the Kosovo national side.

However, as Kosovo is not currently recognised as a sovereign nation by the UN, FIFA won't sanction the Kosovo national side to play in tournaments under their jurisdiction. So the lad might be holding out to see what happens on that front.

As others have said, our national cricket, rugby, athletic etc. squads would be better suited for turning out as the respective representative League of Nation teams.

I agree with sheeps' sentiments, but representing a country one was not born in is a global phenomenon. But it does stretch the point when people are paid handsomely to transfer their nationality to represent another territory. I seem to recall that at a Gulf state imported an African runner in an attempt to boost their chances of winning medals.

Dorigo wasn't different, there's also Rob Jones too and probably loads more we've never even heard of.

Our old maths teacher used to say - just because you're born in a barn, it doesn't make you a horse.

Though I'm not sure what that adds to the debate.

There's probably a play on this, something like "just because you're born a Barnes, doesn't make you a donkey". But I can't think of it.
Grind

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him think like a holding midfielder.

Not unless you speak Horse.

Rob Jones, English parent (turned out for LU)

Dorigo came over aged 14.

Phaar yer big Englander   . Countries mean nothing anymore least of all ours. How can a country that rips off its peoples pensions and savings, deprived them of worthwhile career opportunities, pries and interferes in every aspect of their private lives, erodes their health care, imposes massive tax hikes on their pleasures and allows huge energy and food prices rises to eat away at them even further command any care about nationalism. This country does not give a feck about us and I am giving less and less of one to it. Its national football team is least of any concerns. The selection process merely reflects the global trends of fluid nationality and demonstrates even further that countries mean chuff all. Mere battle grounds for consumer organisations of which the FA is one. I could not care less if Kim Jong-un is eligible.

If this country had any proper fighting to do now we would be well and truly stuffed.
carp

I will always want England to win. It is part of my make up. I don't expect them to because they are generally mediocre. I support England at football, rugby, tiddlywinks, darts, whatever. If they lose I don't lose any sleep. I feel the same way about Leeds. I no longer have a desire to travel to see them. Bates stole that from me. Neither do we have the money. Blair and Brown stole that. That and the sell out of the EPL. No way will I ever attend a Premiership game.

It's a bloody good job that only England-born people are allowed to fight in our armed services innit.  Imagine all the political wranglings there'd been if we had foreigners representing say the RAF

They're just another shit team playing in white.

Agree, mostly. Maybe the England football team are me hanging on to old values, 66 and all that. I shall continue to do so n'all, until of course the inevitable happens.

I personally don't give a fuck if we beat the Aussies at cricket or win the RL World Cup, don't mean a jot, the whole selection proccess for these sports is a joke and a dilution of what 'playing for your country' means.
Grind

Might almost be better to have a competition based on players within each particular country's leagues?

It would be a struggle to fit the egos together and, I suppose, the CL is pretty close to that anyway for most nations, where one team tends to dominate.

I think the last World Cup I was genuinely excited about was in 2002 and that was mostly because I was lucky enough to go and wanted to see the country (Japan).

I'm pretty sure I haven't managed to watch a full game during the current qualification process.
Grind

Actually that's a bit of a lie - I did watch an awful lot of the 2006 finals on the box, but not because of England.
fartcatcher

I see young Jack Wilshere has chipped in and given us the benefit of his wisdom based on 2 competitive games for England. In the second one he hardly made a decent pass in 60 minutes before being subbed.

It's too easy to blame the enduring mediocrity of our national team on johnny foreigner. Our young players get too much money too soon from their clubs. They have everything they want by the time they are twenty. Drinking, clubbing, Rolex watches and the now obligatory Range Rover Sport (with tinted windows) make playing for England is an irrelevance for them.

Makes me old school then....I am Engrelish and support Engerland. And why not? We have no given right to be good, bad, indifferent. When I travel the locals always want to talk about sport, their teams, their nation and always England. I embrace them and they embrace me. It is sport. non racial national support is cool, cross national banter is fun. Had some great chats and banter in countries that are perceived as having only racist fans. And they all want to play England and win......

Wilshere is right, I don't care how he's playing or if he's smoking on or off the pitch, he's come out with something i respect and agree with.  FFS am I drunk to say that?

He's upset Kevin Pieterson  - which can't be bad thing.

Well done young Townsend btw. I thought he looked a good player when on loan.

Clearly being told to fuck off back to Spurs because he was useless by Colin and replaced by ageing crocked Danny Webber gave him the motivation to prove himself at a higher level.

Obviously England's success is down to Warnocks  long term vision.
