Had a little trip to Barcelona last week with Mrs leb, whilst there we got the train down to Tarragona as I had heard that it was an interesting place.

It was well worth the trip, Its a working port with an industrialised port area as you would expect but the train route south from Barcelona runs right along the shoreline for many miles, at times taking you right above the water and the approach to the city is particularly picturesque.

Tarragona was a major Roman settlement and there is a fantastically preserved ampitheatre near to the centre of town.

As with a lot of Spanish cities Tarragona has a Rambla type affair forming the main spine of the city, a Parisian style tree lined Esplanade similar to Barcas version but without the throngs of tourists, mime artists and pickpockets, generally the place had a relaxed and friendly feel to it.

Right at the top end of this street are a balcony and fantastic sea views
The cathedral is absolutely stunning, its a couple of Euros to get in and for this you get a hand held tour guide thing where you press the numbers dispayed about the place and it will tell you about that area.

The central quadrangle was very reminiscent of Durham cathedral and whilst I'm not particularly in the habit of visiting old churches just yet, believe me this is worth seeing.

Also on the main drag there was a fantastic statue of a human pyramid, a traditional competition that goes on between varous places in Spain.

Anyway, its only just over an hour from Barca on the train which was pretty cheap so a nice break from the hustle and bustle .

Late Doors

Interesting, Spain is a fantastic country. We did a two week jaunt round Andalucía a couple of years ago. Loved it so much we’re doing something similar in Northern Spain next year. Will throw this place into the agenda pot, cheers Forum Index -> Strange plaices
