Southern Gothic Shorts - Ed. Phillip J. Morledge

Ten short stories published by PJM Publishing that won and were shortlisted for the first 'Southern Gothic Shorts Writing Competition'. This is only a hundred and odd pages but the stories are terrific. Easily the best short story collection I have read in years and the fact that many of them are from fledgling writers is great.

For those of you who haven't heard of the 'Southern Gothic' term/genre it alludes to writer like Cormac McCarthy, Flannery O' Connor, Truman Capote, William Faulkner, and, well, the list goes on and on. These are stories set in, and about the Southern states of North America and its inhabitants. The originality and imagination in some of the stories in SGS remind me of when I first read and was knocked out by some of Stephen King's short stories when I was a lot younger. I got this on Kindle for 1.78 but wouldn't think twice about advising anybody to pay the full paperback price of 7.98 because this is seriously good fiction. I highly recommend this book to any fan of American Southern writers or fiction in general. 10/10
