South Africa v England (cricket)

Just in time to take away the recession-induced symptoms of S.A.D we have a juicy series of cricket matches to look forward to, made easy by the friendly time-zone synchronicity.

After the Micky Mouse 20/20 for people who don't really like cricket, the one-dayers start on Friday with KP back to resume his one-man war with SA's captain Smith. They would murder each other's mothers and pass the blood round the dressing room in a decanter, given half the chance.

Coupled with that, we have another SA born batsman - the steely-eyed Trott  - to add further juice to the heady cocktail of resentment and vendetta (Strauss, our captain, was also born in SA).

It'll be gloves off sport of the highest order, with personal battles to heighten the keen rivalry between the teams.

England will be underdogs but if Strauss can harness the spirit of the Ashes, we may well leave the Proteas chewing on their biltong-stained hubris.

I'm not sure what the t***** might be - turnip?

I didn't know that about Dean Jones.
Butts

Well this referral system is causing a predictable rumpus.

Broad given out LBW but only after the South Africans had had word from the dressing room to appeal. Then Petersen bowled off a clear no ball with no referral available.

I may be old fashioned in this regard but bring back Dickie Bird and then all will be right with the world.
Butts

We could win this. Who would have thought it, Ian Bell centurion. I take it all back.
Butts

Change that to will win this (weather permitting tomorrow).
grunt

Some cricket commentators are saying Graeme Swann is the best finger spinner since Derek Underwood. We just seem to be lacking an aggressive fast bowler at the mo. Other than that there's not a lot wrong except consistency of course.
Butts

Amazing the progress he's made in the last two years, from a second string Northants spinner to world-beater. He is also a decent batsman and can talk a good game too. I think he's watched and learned a lot from Shane Warne on how to go about the game.
fartcatcher

I think it's particularly satisfying to beat S Africa. There's still a certain arrogance about them, particularly Smith and Kallis.

Four of our players born there as well. Pieterson, Trott, Strauss and Prior.
Butts

They've been very vocal about the supposed weaknesses in the English team. I think the England coach Andy Flower (a Zimbabwean) is a ruthlessly efficient manager and he's got the perfect captain in Strauss - diplomatic but steely with it.

If we win this one then it will be without Pietersen, Trott and Anderson contributing a great deal which bodes well for the rest of the series.
lebowski

Great win !!

Just switched the radio on to listen to the 5th day and we've already skittled 'em for 133. Tremendous effort.
Grind

The wife was born in South Africa.

Must go and tell her the good news..........

Can you get biltong out there?

Swann is now rated no 3 bowler in the world, the best spinner. We appear to be getting a cricket team with some real potential here.

A word on Michael Vaughan's first stint as a commentator - quite brilliant and only a matter of time before he's snapped up by Sky I think.

Vaughany was good wasn't he , he gave us some superb insight, including the reasons why Swann was discarded at an early stage by the England set up ( Too arrogant, cocky and took to drinking with Phil Tufnell " Which is not where a young player wants to be " )
Butts

Cricket seems to lend itself to articulate captains taking to commentating (Atherton, Hussain). It illustrates how bland they have to be with the media when they are doing the job.

I also heard Vaughan say about Swann that when he went on tour (presumably the one with Tuffers) he was quickly christened the 'village idiot' which made me think he might go down quite well on here. I'll send him a message on Twitter inviting him on.
Butts

Not good, going to be 1-1 with one to play.

Trott Clean bowled, Bell and Collingwood 150 each ? Probably not eh ?
Butts

Change that probably to a very tentative possibly.
Room for a little one

Running the risk of jinxing the whole thing but... super gritty resistance by these two players. Credit to Bell for sticking with it. For Collymore this is like second nature.

If we escape with this it will be a guaranteed draw for the series. That's pretty impressive...
Butts

Amazing, watched the last two hours on an exercise bike at the gym in the company on the bike next to me of Neil Back (British Lion, England RU World Cup winner and coach of Leeds Carnegie). Great chap and a real patriot - he had some choice names for the South Africans

We are an extremely difficult team to beat and Graeme Smith had a face like thunder at the end. Serves them right for accusing us of cheating.

Aye Ulrika was only just saying he was quite handy with the bat
What a week this is turning out to be
Butts

Did you see it LD?
Late Doors

No been surreptitiously huddled around various computers and I phones around the place. Very Very Tense. Spot on with the being a difficult team to beat, there is great character in the camp with all of them capable of doing the special things
Butts

That's two tests out of three that SA have bottled at the last. Smith is a fine captain but he needs a top-class spinner.

Conversely, we could do with a nasty fast bowler like Steyn or Morkel - our lot are a bit angelic for my liking.

Onions looked as though he could have kept them out all day - what a gritty look he gave them.
lebowski

Twice in 3 tests that Onions has had to do that, it was a really tense finish.

One up One to play.
Late Doors

Thou Shallot pass

Yes, here all week
Butts

Time for KP to come good. Trott has been out to six snorters.

Nice story in the Guardian about Onions' first cricket club - Gateshead Fell. He started out as a batsman. In his first game as a 15 year old he hit a century.
lebowski

Final test has started, England batting.

Currently 47/4.

Cook just given out lbw off a no ball, even though there was a review by the 3rd umpire ( Daryl Harper)
Butts

Eng 48-4, Strauss out first ball. Where's the rain?
lebowski

Oi, 52/4

Has he got Little Frank as his runner?

Looks great on a Sony TV the cricket does.
Butts

Looks great on Sky Player also. I have to make sure the telly's turned down though as the computer feed is a good minute behind the TV.

Hmmm, sky player eh ?

Didn't know you could do that Butts, just had a look at it, it might be for me, however when I watch the sample stream it is continually re-buffering, is that a sign that my broadband isn't up to it or do you download some software when you subscribe that makes that go away ?
lebowski

I Think I've frightened Butts off with a technical question.

No, mine's bufferless. I've got Sky broadband but didn't need anything else. Might be to do with your overall speed.

is that good or bad?
Butts

This is looking grim. We've ridden our luck all series and now look to be on the receiving end of a good beating.
Butts

Daryl Harper (third umpire) upholds lbw against Cook  - off a no ball and then turns down a caught behind appeal against Smith when he forgets to turn the volume up on his monitor. You couldn't make it up and England have lodged a complaint against him the useless tit.

Who's your broadband with?

I reckon you'd be good with about 8mbps.

Better than Leb's it depends what you want to use it for?

1 mb is rubbish. I live 1.5 miles from the middle of nowhere and get the same sort of speed as Sir BC.

Why did they drop Onions? He was running rings round them

England and South Africa seem to be a match made in heaven.  Both sides are either great or utter shite.

Apart from we've mostly been shite and they've been more great than shite.
fartcatcher

half our team are South African anyway. It's a bit like S Africa A vs S Africa B with a couple of token Northerners.
Butts

All in all its been a very good tour.

Cook and Bell have re-found their form and Swann is now the best spinner in the world. Anderson and Onions have had very good tours. Broad continues to confound.

Trott and Pietersen will come back strongly I'm sure. Collingwood is class.

Strauss/Flower have made some bizarre toss/selection decisions which, until the last Test, they got away with. Prior needs to learn from Boucher in order to be our long-term w/k.

7/10 all told I reckon.
