Simon Schama's The Story of the Jews

No, not a misspelling of the hit by popular beat combo Pete Wylie.

Any book or programme that is presented or written by Simon Schama is a classy proposition. This series should be a doozy from the interview I read with him from yesterday's Times supplement magazine. Great historian and a fascinating man presenting a documentary about a great and fascinating race that happens to be his own*. What could possibly be on another channel to lure you away from this.

* His own as in he's Jewish n' that. Not that he's in charge of every Jewish person in the world.

Starts next Sunday on da BBC.

PBS had a cracker of a series on about The Jew in America. One of the most interesting documentaries I've seen in a long time.

This is my favourite word of Yiddish origin at the moment. Only heard of it the other week but its already in heavy usage at Dock Towers:

Has anybody else been watching this? Just finished the penultimate episode. It's brilliant. A reminder of what the Beeb can achieve when they haven't got their heads up their Strictlybakeoffshitenews condecending arses. This is the best thing I have seen Schama do. The locations are stunning and the history is fascinating. 10/10

Finished watching the fifth and final episode re: the founding of a Jewish state. Brilliant and a great job in summarising the history of Palestine and Israel and a testament to Schama's historians neutrality. In one interview he is talking to one of the newer Jewish 'Settlers' who have forcibly taken land from Palestinians and you can see him using all his gentlemanly skills to keep from taking the guys head off as he endures listening to the dogma he's spewing out. Easily one of the great documentary series of the last decade about a people who are usually judged by stereotypes. The fact that Schama himself is a Jew added to the passion for the subject but steered clear of any revisionary bias. 100/10
