my amazing friend layla the artist

layla has got quite a story - she is a fantastic girl and at the time i decided to be a journo/writer and do a degree  she decided to be an artist and did a degree in fine art.
i am just about to file the manscript for the first book i have ever done and here is layla's portrait of boy george, which he commissioned her to do.

if you had asked either of us 5 years ago if we'd be doing these things we would have laughed at you. funny old thing, life.

Butts

Exciting times, amazing colours on that.
Tank Girl

the colours are stunning - they are massive and when you stand in front of them, well they just blow me away, make me feel like bursting in to tears.
its partly from the sheer pride in her and awe of her talent tho.

the big news is - i have commissioned her to paint Reg!!!
Tank Girl

she is also PL's barber
Butts

Well I hope Reg looks as noble as George does. He must be very happy with it.

I'll have a short back and Boy George please!
bearing

Wow what a painting...

*Looks stunned*
Forest

That is excellent

Pond Life

That is an old picture, last time i got my hair cut i made them cut the sides and the back and left the fringe all long and floppy.

Brilliant painting TG, as you maybe aware I'm not a Arts type of guy. But that is stunning.

Can we please stop taking about hair though as I have hair envy issues. BTW PL I like the twitter pic very Davey Jones from the monkees.

loving the Paul Smith stripe in the background
Pond Life

I only get confused in the best of places.
Pond Life

Would glasses make me look more intelligent?

Pond Life

I see you're all to fearful to reply, i might keep it.
Forest

You could go for the Clacker look

Pond Life

That is quite remarkable.
Forest

Thank you
Pond Life

Have you thought of taking great works of art and adding to them in your own style and calling yourself the leading artist of your generation, i bet you could fill galleries in London.
Forest

Could I wear a cravat?
Pond Life

I should imagine it would be obligatory.
Pond Life

You could run down to London with a few treasures in the van, pull up, get out, unload the van, straighten your cravat and people will comment 'he is so rustic and real'.
Pond Life

You know like we have the one word at a time story, we could do the same with a picture, take a blank frame and each add a bit, of course, we'll have to agree whose turn it is.
Forest

I like the sound of that
Pond Life

Shall we start with a blank frame or with an image of something?
Forest

Blank I think
Forest

This could be the best idea ever or the worst
Pond Life

Ok. What we'll do is nominate the next person to draw so i'll provide the blank now, and nominate Forest, site artist to give us the first strokes.

Pond Life

TG is telling me that this is not a new idea,, however the difference in the projects done before is that people added to the artwork and it was voted on, who came up with the best addition got that bit to stay on. What bollocks!! That sounds like conformity to me, and our art should not conform, art is about striking out, not restraining.

We will invent a masterpiece, it will dazzle the eyes and the minds of the world.
Forest

I'll nominate PL to make the next addition
Forest

Can we have one rule - Nobody can draw genitals on it
Pond Life

Forest wrote:

agreed.

I nominate Bearing to add the next part.

bearing

It's looking quite festive isn't it, give me five and I'll get one posted.
bearing

I nominate Fin for the next bit.
Fin

Ah yes that is much better than Laylas

Mick McCann

You know, talking about art n'that,  I once saw this dead colourful painting of Boy George. It had an absolutely fantastic perspective, kinda done from below.

Probably just as well - I thought you were studying these days?

Late Doors

Thought of this thread  on Sunday when Plummy voiced ponce and art critic Brian Sewell said in the Times magazine that women shouldn’t be allowed to be artists, they should stick to peeling onions. This is the same fella who said there are no successful women artists as they lose it at about 20 or 30 years old and it must be something to do with child birth, and that ''only men are capable of aesthetic greatness''.

Not sure TG and her mate would agree with that. Or me for that matter what say the rest ? It’s probably true that the vast majority of recognized fabulous artists have been men but surely that is a product of circumstances other than creativity. Blokes like him saying they shouldn’t be allowed being one of those circumstances I suspect.
Carp

Much as I dislike Sewell, he has a point. I think that most women lose their creativity when their ability to breed ends, or when they become less attractive to males.
bearing

I do not agree with either Sewell or Carp
Carp

sexist
Tank Girl

there is something interesting about this maybe in the sense that women are better at expressing themselves emotionally in their day to day lives and possibly less compelled to create art  - at least in the converntional sense.

but you would think its historically been men because women didnt get to do fuck all until about 40 years ago.
hardly likely one would have had a patron in the 1500's if one was female?

maybe nurturing children could be considered a creative process.

Bringing up children is a creative process. We are evolving as a race, so the fact that women did "fuck all" until 40 years ago is part of the ongoing process.
Tank Girl

so... it is only hanging in the fucking national portrait gallery now if you dont mind.

she is in an exhibition for the BP Portrait Award - she not in the final 4 but out of 2,500 thousand entries she is one of the 53 artists to go on show at the gallery.

also the portrait is in today's times arts supplement. one of nine out of the exhibition - hers is the front page.

i am bursting with pride.
Fin

Congratulations to her.

*wonders if any of the Regg pictures made it*
Tank Girl

she hasnt done reg yet, i am going to have to have a firm word with her about that.
Tank Girl

we are off to the gallery with her this week. i will cry like an idiot. i just know it.
lolwarlol

I need a whole new outfit. I may wear an eyepatch like Bryan Ferry did.
bearing

Bloody hell Brian, have you become all bohemian or summat?
lolwarlol

Oh christ, that is so last century, i'd be wearing it ironically.
bearing

Christ, he's started to talk differently now.
Tank Girl

each item of clothing you wear could be based on something once worn by a 'brian'.
lolwarlol

WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!!!
Tank Girl

jacket.

nice with the eyepatch
Tank Girl

or perhaps this - it will be evening after all
Butts

Might be a bit too warm for an orange Brian scarf

lolwarlol

I like Cloughs Jacket, Ferry's eye patch and the snails scarf. What a look. Skinny black jeans and winkle pickers.
bearing

bearing
