Michel Houellebecq

I just discovered this French author.

I've just finished Atomised, a darky pessimistic yet hilarious tale of two brothers and their fucked up lives. Heavy going in places but still the best thing I've read for a while.

I'm currently half way through Platform, which is a celebration of sex tourism. Not quite as dark or funny as Atomised but still a gripping read.

These have been translated really well, nothing appears to be lost.

I'm particularly enjoying the cynical tone of the books. The author truly believes that modern society is fucked and that individuals are doomed to lead lonely and unhappy lives.

Well worth checking out.

Cheers Tox. Never heard of him before.
Grind

You just can't beat a gripping read about sex.

Is Atomised funny enough to bring me out of the gloom that is The Road?

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving it but bloody hell it's DARK! and I really think my next book needs to be upbeat and funny.

Is that chap in your avatar a Prussian soldier?

I've never read The Road but I've heard of it and I don't imagine it to be a barrel of laughs.

Atomised is not exactly upbeat but it is quite funny in a fucked up kind of way. It's about two brothers, one is a geeky scientist who is pretty much asexual and the other is a schoolteacher is totally obsessed with sex. Their (mis)adventures are very painful to read but also quite amusing.

Dunno. I typed "pickelhaube" into google just for the German picture thread and thought it would make a pretty cool avatar.

a provocateur in every sense and a very talented writer

I'm just about finished Whatever, his first novel.

A decent read, in the same vein as the others, about bitter and sexually frustrated office workers. There's a really painful chapter where a desperate 28 year old virgin is attempting, and failing miserably, to chat up teenage girls in a nightclub.

However, the translation isn't as good as the others. It feels a bit clumsy in places and the whole book suffers as a result. It's just a shame it wasn't translated by the same guy who did Atomised and Platform.
