Meadowlark Lemon - Dead

Meadowlark Lemon has died aged 83 - ex Harlem Globetrotter.

It was odd as a small kid when I found out that Meadowlark Lemon was a real person, not the animated character from the cartoon. I think it must have been either a Christmas exhibition match or on World of Sport when they had the slot for "unusual" sports after On The Ball.

RIP Meadowlark Lemon.

You're twisting my melon, man.

The Harlem Globetrotters are still ace even now - worth a watch if you ever get the chance.

Trivia question - can you name their (now historical - up to 1995) perennial opponents?

RIP Meadowlark.

Were they called the Washington Generals or something like that?

Yep - I think they did occasionally win, but only a handful out of more than a thousand or so games.
Plastic Man

My Aunt Margaret (and yes, before you ask, that Aunt Margaret) took my brother and I to watch the Harlem Globetrotters play at the Wembley Arena, some time around the late 1960s/ early 1970s.

I can confirm there was no shock result on that occasion.

Got me whistling 'Sweet Georgia Brown' now.
Late Doors

A mate of mine, the son of a Jamaican immigrant sometimes talks about racism and growing up in England in the 70s mainly after my prompting I have to say. I ask him about what factors made things better expecting things like positive discrimination, political correctness and other laws but he always says the things that made the most difference to him,his family and friends was sport. Football with the black players at West Brom, John Barnes and the West Indies cricket team did more for changing attitudes over time than any laws he says. Forum Index -> Sink or Swim
