Leeds v Brighton

Half time and we are now 2-0 down.
Mmmm, seems as though we are back to normal as such.
Radio saying that Brighton are playing some good football and have totally dominated.

The first half was truly abysmal, truly truly abysmal!

It was 1-0 at half time.

Soz, my mistake. How were they in the second half?

Just truly abysmal

Well not that bad in the second.

Can't get up for the usual detailed reports yet. MDM and i sauntered down from the car not fully convinced that Saturdays result was the basis for confidence. When you hear Austin and Tong in the same line up no amount of new era excitement can overcome that. First game of the season for me and it won't be till October until i get any sort of regularity going.

Brighton gave us the run around in the first half. They had three at the back with a center half pushing up. They had two up front with one lad dropping deep and another 5 in midfield. Against our straight and very narrow 442 they simply steam rolled us especially down the flanks. It was a horror show and how we went in only one nil down at half time is a mystery.

Warnock seemed to blame the keeper for not coming out and getting down quick enough for the goal but the damage was done long before that as they threaded through us with ease. With no width we simple congested the middle area whilst Brighton simply spread it around waiting for us to chase before making the crucial pass. It was happening all the rime and all credit to them for their control and movement.

We improved significantly second half bring Njose on  introducing some width and for a considerable period we had them on the back foot. However we mustered just one single half chance for all our possession when Tong could have perhaps scored. If young Sam had as much faith in himself to beat his man as I have he may have produced an end product  to all his great possession. We were doing everything correct except making the end pass to someone in a scoring position and ultimately paid the price.

Their second from a free kick on the edge of the box crept under a jumping wall and killed the game. No excuses, we were committing silly fouls all over the pitch. Not despondent though, the new lads looked alright. it's going to be a transitional season. Where and what's it going to transition to is the question.

Can't understand why Austin keeps getting picked.

He has all the deficiencies of Jonathan Douglas, Andy Hughes and Michael Brown rolled into one without any of the positives.

Lost a bit of timber, makes him a tad quicker and he didn't give the ball away so much last night but chuff me he can not do anything productive. Got booked early on as well last night which supressed his game a little

Austin had a good second half and he definitely appears to work harder than the rest of the Leeds midfield.

'Whoever' picked that team, with the big lugger upfront and no wingers/width in the team, needs interrogating as to his credentials.  And then at half time, 'whoever' takes Smith the big lug off, for Ajiose who goes out wide to presumably whip in crosses in the air to the forwards.

I watched Austin in the first half, when Brighton were yet again strolling around with the ball around the half-way line.  Austin, positioned in front of our back 4 and to the right, was shuttling between two Brighton men who he was apparently meant to mark.  I don't know what our other midfielders were doing but someone has accused Murphy of looking for shooting stars in the sky more than at his duties

Shit bastards, long way to go.

I was hoping this season was going to be the one that saw Murphy push on and become the improving accomplished player his potential at Crewe suggested. Get one season under his belt to cement him into the place and grow. Didn't see much last season to keep that hope and certainly on Tuesday night he was often caught off the pace, lacked energy and vision and didn't look comfortable in possession. Still not given up on him though.

I sometimes feel guilty about badmouthing Austin, but I've seen him play about a dozen times and he's been shit all bar one.

The most memorable occasion being when he got sent off after ten minutes for exacting retribution on an opposition player five yards in front of the ref. It was the same game that Diouf got sent off for waving his lunch box about in front of the opposition fans. Happy days.

A defensive midfielder needs to be able to read the game reasonably well, tackle cleanly and deliver a short pass to one of the more creative types. Austin has all bar three of these attributes.

He reminds me of a Sunday league player of my acquaintance, who when you called for the ball, would deliver it at such speed that evasive action was the only safe option.

Once an unfortunate spectator or one of our subs had been despatched to retrieve the ball, I would look at my team-mate despairingly and point to my feet. To which he would respond - 'you asked for it and you got it. Expletives deleted.

I repeat, he had a good second half v Brighton.

And that sending off was a joke decision by the way!

i'm all for slagging players off with justification but come on

I shall be seeing him in the flesh on Sept 20th when I grace ER with my presence for the first time this season  so expect the usual quality unbiased reportage.

Are you considering proposing a post-match snifter?
smiling badger

The Huddersfield game, FC?
Myself and the boy are planning to see this game.
A pint before could be on the cards...

Definitely up for a drink either before or after.

Limited time after as my ASBO requires me to be back in CV23 by 9:00 pm
