I Am Pilgrim - Terry Hayes

When I go on holiday I like a good thriller of a book. Something that I can pick up and put down easily (in my most recent holiday something that can be picked up and put down easily between attending to my baby son and teaching him that sand is for making castles out of and is not as he fundamentally believes a nourishing mid-morning snack). I had seen the distinctive front cover of I Am Pilgrim featured heavily on advertising stands in Smiths and Waterstones as one of this years bestsellers and after reading rave reviews of it I thought I'd give it a go. Although I'm not an aficionado of the spy/espionage thriller genre I do enjoy the page turning roller coasters by the likes of Lee Childs etc. But I Am Pilgrim has in my personal opinion upped the ante for what readers should expect from this well worn and very successful kind of novel.

This is the story of a potential end to Western (and probably the world's) civilisation. Our narrator is Scott Murdoch, actually it isn't Scott Murdoch because that's an alias. The man narrating the book is a member of an unknown organisation in the U.S. Goverment that spies on spy's, a police force of the C.I.A. if you will. Who 'fixes' situations and individuals who threaten national security. Not so much black ops, more along the lines of very-fucking-dangerous-and-very-fucking-powerful-and-if-we-enter-your-life-your-day-is-going-to-get-a-lot-worse-pal ops. The other main character in this is what Murdoch and his colleagues call a 'cleanskin'. A man who has no known affiliations with terrorism and from a very young age has diligently swept away any trace of himself that he has left in his wake and who is about to unleash devastation of biblical proportions on the population of the United States.

From the celebrations in the mountains of the Hindu Kush in Afghanistan at the end of the Soviet occupation, an exclusive apartment in Paris, a motel room on the lower East Side of Manhattan with a body dissolving in a bath of acid, and The Gaza Strip Hayes takes the reader on an epic round-the-world action-packed ride in this brilliantly researched story. The writing style is great and the characters are thoroughly believable. What really impressed me the most was the forensic detection passages in the book which were fascinating. If I had a hat I would tip it to Terry Hayes. It weighs in at over 700 pages but you will zip through it. Pilgrim. Remember the name because he just might save your life....................and everybody else's.

I got the Kindle version of this but I recently saw the hardback edition on special offer in WH Smiths for 6.99. Worth a look!

ForgEt it then. What's in a letter you fucking dolphin exploiter.

Point of order:

I have just been in the Morrisons at Belle Isle which I believe is a part of the South Leeds Delta in which you dwell and I didn't see one studious looking dolphin. Not even in the fish finger bit of the freezer section. So I think ladies and gentleman of the jury that Nyles O Cranium is a fucking liar!

They're all submerged I mean immersed in their editing duties, dafty.

Was in Cottingley today. No dolphins spotted. Not even a lost looking octopus. Again for the record: Fucking liar!
