Howard Marks

Always thought he would have been an interesting chap to go to a drink with. No illegal substances obviously.

Came across as a charming rogue and I believe he was one.

Hadn't realised that he was an Oxford Physics graduate (probably not a member of the Bullingdon club though).

Obit says that at time of death he was resident in Leeds. I can imagine him in the Pack Horse or the Fenton.

His autobiography is supposed to be an excellent read. I will endeavour to obtain one before they put the prices up.

An uncommon criminal. rip

I've read Mr Nice and Seņor Nice - Mr is pre-fame biography. Seņor Nice is him exploring the world and his roots with a bit of money, a few years of freedom and fame behind him - both very readable books full of brilliant anecdotes, shameless namedropping and all sort of general knowledge titbits

I had an evening out with him about 9 years ago at the Elbow Room in Leeds

I think I'd been to the Lucas Radebe testimonial with James Brown when we were still on good terms and he said afterwards I should meet them at Elbow Rooms.

A very chilled few hours with Howard Marks, Dave Beer and bizarrely the actor who played Spider on Coronation Street (with their respective ladies) as memory serves Don Kiddick of OMJ was there with his Mrs too.

Howard was as he seems on the screen and in his books. Friendly, intellectual, polite, smiley, great talker and listener and very very very Welsh.

Never saw him again but it was lovely to speak to the guy behind the books and find out for all his good and his bad he was a total mensch

What on earth is a mensch?
Sir Bulldog Craggwood

mensch
A mensch is a someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character. The key to being "a real mensch" is nothing less than character, rectitude, dignity, a sense of what is right, responsible, decorous. (Rosten, Leo. 1968. The Joys of Yiddish. New York: Pocket Books. 237)
"Lou Epstein. I want you to meet a real mensch: Chuck Schwartz."
