RIP Leonard Cohen.

Quite appropriate to post here - I wasn't a fan (or even all that aware of his music) until I read a thread about him on this site and duly bought a compilation album.

Sadly he's ineligible now, but he could easily have been considered alongside Dylan as a fitting candidate for the Nobel prize for literature.

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Songwriters: COHEN, LEONARD

I love his words but can't stand the way he sings them. I can handle the fact that it's out of tune but not the speed at which he gets through his songs. I just end up yelling 'get on with it' at him.

I wouldn't expect his tempo to speed up any time soon....

The originator of Glum Rock?
Late Doors

Classic case of so called Glum stuff that always cheered me up. I love the way he sings (sang )
Late Doors

Brilliant Tribute piece on him in Uncut by David Cavanagh who incidentally must be one of the best music writers out there these days. Moving and sensitive as well  as massively informative. He mentions when Leonard was three years into his five year tour during his recent "third phase" renaissance. "We began this tour three years ago" he told the audience in 2010. " I was 73, just a kid with a crazy dream" Forum Index -> Sink or Swim
