Fences

Watched this last night.

An interesting one and I wonder if Denzil Washington (who stars and directs it) is playing the system a bit here. Firstly for me Washington is 'one' (of many) brilliant actors over the ages. And I say actors and NOT black actors which always pisses me off when the likes of him and Sydney are mentioned.

This film is predominantly full of black actors and as such you may think before you watch it that it is about the genuine strife and issues black Americans have gone through over the ages. But watch it and it isn't. The issues in it would be the same for poor white, Hispanic, native American India, indeed any race.

For the first 30 minutes it is a bit heavy, set around his back yard with full on dialog (mainly from Washington)., But then you twig what it is all around, past demons and secrets shaping him into the person he is now and how he treats his family, and the script and screen play are a masterpiece.

Ok I think Lion is a better film but put Fences and La La fucking Land head to head and Fences knocks spots off it. But I wonder what will clean up at the awards. And will that fuel Washingtons fire for the 'whitewash of the awards' as he puts it.

Sounds good. Its sadly almost impossible for people of my generation to not think "black". All we can do is try and hope that subsequent generations dont even think in terms of those divisive definitions

We are just past the era of calling people darkies but still lived (living???) through the times of us and them mentality. As you say lets hope things improve certainly I am very impressed with my two kids, they pull my old man up when he uses such terms as darkies.

Sadly though I really do fear for the British society and can see in the next 10 years us turning into a similar culture as those damn Yanks and have ghettos of ethnic origins which will become no go areas.

And that will be, in my eyes, the biggest 'achievement' of the likes of ISIS or these other factions and not things like 9/11 or Paris.

We all need to address the current 'us and them' situation with minority ethnic factions and do what Britain has been pretty good with over the ages and have tolerance and integration. Everyone has their part to play here.
