England manager

FA given permission by WBA to talk to Hodgson.
Kingmaker of Lilliput

Spot on decision.
Kevin Khatchadourian

Has Harry counted himself out? Has the FA decided Harry is not the man for the job? Will the FA talk to other managers, including Harry, in the fullness of time?

With just over a month to go before it kicks off I doubt that they are planning to talk to anyone else, at least until Hodgson turns it down anyway.
Kevin Khatchadourian

He must be mad. I can't think of many managers that have got out without getting a mauling by the press and public....Venables and Robson maybe.
Seal

Surely he'll get an easy ride form the press because of the lateness of the decision? You'd think wouldn't you

I wouldn't do the job for that money.

From the BBC website:

"After a career that has taken him around the world, the 64-year-old has accepted the biggest job in English football just over a month away from the European Championship."

Re: "the biggest job in English football."

I'd argue it isn't and hasn't been for at least a decade. What makes it the biggest job? Surely a manager of a big premiership club is bigger with regard to wages, responsibility, and public and media scrutiny over his success rate? And with the England job its only playing a few games a year as opposed to a full season in the league.

As I have said before, I haven't watched an England game since the piss poor preformance by England against Germany in the last world cup. And now I have finally knocked watching all football on the head. But can I ask, does the England national side still matter to anybody? It baffles me to think that it does. Its all based on a media-fabricated image of the 66' World Cup and three lions etc. Are people still patriotic for a load of fairly-ok football players?

It's habit.

Sorry to go into so much detail.

No. Not good enough. What is it that you are actually supporting? The team of assorted couldn't-give-a-fuck individuals or the English nation? Why do you have an interest in it? I'm dead curious me.

I think why I ask is that I reached a point in my life where I realised, (along with the realisation of what a farce football has become in England) "Hang on, why am I actually bothered about who wins a football match?" I couldn't come up with an answer so I stopped watching it. Firstly with the international games and then eventually with the league. It was that easy for me. An epiphany if you will.

I walked into that didn't I. I was expecting a "Why don't you epiph off" but your retort will do nicely Mr. Grind. Ta!

Your fanny does have some valid points.

* I bet there's at least one hole in your argument though

Doesn't matter who the manager is, the team will be built around the same players who were shit in the world cup.

I will be surprised if we get through the first round.

Will still probably watch it down the club as moaning about England is a good bonding exercise with my fellow Birdingburians.

The English nation if anything, several of the players I wouldn't piss on. It's very rare I can sit through 90 minutes, much rather have a bit of medieval history.

How i can still be patriotic to a country that  simultaneously wants to tax the living daylights out of me and imprison me for subversion is beyond me but i kinda am. It isn't towards those gits in the white shirts though or anything connected with them. In fact i would cringe with despair if JT et all ever lifted a national trophy.

In the past defeats to West Germany, Poland, Sweden. Holland, the Argies and those two Semis have had a similar impact to a few Leeds United major defeats but not now. I could not give two flying ones about our national team now. The only attachment or any patriotism is towards some kind of nostalgia and commonality with mates. An England defeat in the Semis this summer would register as much grief as putting a pair of socks on only to find one of them has a hole in the toe end

I am patriotic. Can't get too excited about the national side. What is the point, the system is against home grown players developing in to world beaters. When you can go out and buy instant success with Sky's dollars, why invest in home grown. I will not support a team with John Terry in it. So for me, the Euro thingy means nothing...Come on Hrvatska

Sorry Roy, I have tweaked my achilles tendon and am therefore unavailable for selection.
