Dubrovnik to Zadar

I'm off to Zadar for the Unabombers' Electric Elephant at the end of August, booked a flight to Dubrovnik and rented a car for 2 days to amble my way up to Zadar.

Just looking at Google maps and the coastal road seems to end at the border with Bosnia, looks like you have to travel up a peninsular to Trapnj and get a ferry over to Ploce to continue the journey north.

Anybody ever driven this route and got any advice on where to stop off for 1 night en route?
Jones the Steamed

Woohoo, off work for 2 weeks as of now.

Croatia here I come again.

Jones the Steamed

Not on the decks.

Looking forward to Todd Terje, The Unabombers and Don Letts should be interesting.  Be nice being entertained as opposed to entertaining.

Wow Jonesy, sounds like a right adventure. Wish I was going.

Via con dios mate!

Pick the car up Tuesday morning then set off up the coast road in the general direction of Zadar, no digs booked en route or in Zadar.

Fly back from Venice on 2nd September, might get the ferry to Ancona or bus it through Slovenia then down through Trieste, got an open book at the moment.  Probably end up camping in Petracane, Zadar but I'd imagine I need a tent to do that.

Let the good times roll.

Plenty more fish in the sea.

Tuesday mornings hangover and grumpiness was exacerbated by the ignorant car hire company at Dubrovnik airport not answering the free phone that is your only contact once you arrive.  Clutched with a few scraps of paper, printed off the net, it was recommended by the Info Desk that we ignore the phone and go to the little car hire village on the other side of the car park.  Thanks for wasting my time hanging on the end of an useless phone for 40 minutes.

Result, sort of.  Found the office.  Got sorted with the motor 1 1/2 hours later and then finally proceeded up the Dalmatian coast trying to shift gear with my left arm hung out the window.

Stayed the 1st night in Gradac, small fishing village that found us a small apartment for 40 Euro, bonus was that we discovered Karlovachuko pivo and cheapish pizza that's as good as any other in the world.

Motored up the coast stopping another night en route with a pit stop at Hajduk Splits ground squeezed in before the fun began in Petrcane, Zadar.

We played Hajduk in the 1972/73 European Cup Winners Cup beating them 3-1 at home, we went down 2-0 in Yugoslavia going out on away goals following a few dubious refereeing decisions.  To think that Wrexham used to compete at that level was surreal having seen us lose to Forest Green by a bigger margin than Hajduk managed all those years ago.

Magnificent stadium, very well supported club too if you consider the fan base seems to extend from about 100 miles south of the city and all the way up to Zadar if the officially sanctioned graffiti you encounter all the way up the A8 can be used as a marker.

Zadar beckoned and we got there in 1 piece which is more than I'm in now.
Pond Life

Jones man, you're our official jet setter. I'm well envious. Thank you for the report and stay safe.
Jones the Steamed

Had to drop the motor off for 14:00 so cruised in to Zadar in our Skoda then headed out owards Petrcane, thought we'd got there and booked a room ahead of the festival crowd for 40 Euro a night.  Bargain.  Not.

We were still in Zadar about 8 miles from the venue in digs that hadn't been decorated since the communist era, spookily there was a shrine to a little blonde girl that greeted us on entering the hallway.

Check this out.

Bit pissed now, the saga continues tomorrow.

Tank Girl

this is great, jones the advernturer.
is the dalmation coast not extremely beautiful?
Jones the Steamed

The drive is stunning, cliffs to one side and sun scorched islands to the other, the shoreline's peppered with off the track unspoilt fishing villages inhabited by insouciant locals whiling the day away in the shade.  Very calming attitude to life.

After booking the communist era room for 5 nights we took off in the car and realised our mistake, put up with the room for 1 night then took our tent to Petrcane by bus.  Found the Pineta camp site and proceeded to try and squeeze the tent in to the last available space that unfortunately didn't come with much shade.

After wrestling the tent for a good 1 1/2 hours a German couple shooed us away and got the darned thing up in 10 minutes flat, we'd lost a few pounds sweltering in the heat but it was the titters and bemused looks that we endured during our failed erection of the tent that hurt most.  Laurel & Hardy would have been proud of our little show.

Having secured some shelter for the rest of our stay in Croatia it was time to explore and sample some of the music on offer.  The set up's rather cool to say the least, a beach bar with a thatched dj booth and platform that acts as a lounge about area by day and dancefloor overlooking the sea at night.  Main stage with a dance area, Barbarellas Discotheque, plenty of cushioned chill out seats shaded by pine trees, 4 or 5 bars and all the music served on Funktion One systems.

Happens to the best of us.If i remember correctly watching a couple of Germans also sorted out my embarrassing problem.

Enjoying this thread and looking forward to the Don Letts story
Jones the Steamed

Should have been out the house an hour ago to sort tunes, got another hour wait so here's my Don Letts story.

We're at the festival chilling in the shade of the pine trees close to the Beach bar dj booth and non other than Don Letts ambles up with Ashley Beedle, good blissed out music pumping on the Funktion One system and everyboy's having a fine time.  Apart from one character.

This character strolls up to Don and what I thought was an amicable piss take turns out to be upsetting Don.

"Go away if you don't want to be here, move on up the beach...'

Don's getting more and more irate and tells the fedora bestooned bikini girl that if she was to say whatever to Stefano who's dj'ing some top quality sunshiny tunes that he'd punch her in the face.  This was accompanied by a right upper cut in to thin air to demonstrate the consequences.

Few minutes later DL's walking past my couch so I call him.

"Don"

"What?" he says as he spins round to greet me.

"You should have been a diplomat"

"What d'ya mean?"

"Well you sorted that girl out."

Do you now what she was on about?"

"No."

"She was asking us to turn the music down at a festival....."

He carried on ranting for a while longer then took his flustered mind to relax somewhere.

FFS you don't try and get the volume ratcheted down for your personal liking when there's a few 100 bods having a party,  she was a journo apparently who'll be reporting what an arsehole Danny G is aka Don Lettss.

Funny as fuck but maybe you had to be there.

Next instalment the Homoelectric boat party.

Oh well, was worth a try.

I too have done that coast top to bottom and then back up the middle. Did East to West on my last trip out. Some spectacular scenery between Zagreb and Rijeka.

Nowt to do with me, I was teetering on the edge of the concrete bowl getting a pic of my bessie mate having rendered myself deaf by sticking my head inside the 10 foot tall Funktion One speaker to the left.

The wind rushfrom a bass heavy system like that, that dries your body is fanfabbiedozzie, proper crisp bass on a proper sound system.

Well worth shagging my ear drums.

You are to be congratulated on a thoroughly entertaining travelogues, Mr Jones.

I'm intrigued by your statement, "the wind rush from a bass heavy system like that, that dries your body". Is this literal, as in a Dyson-style "blade" hand-dryer that one encounters in motorway service system bogs the length and breadth of the country? Or is this something that old people like me aren't supposed to understand?

Also, Eddie wants know if you happened to have the telephone number of the blonde lass in the red top/ short skirt, by any chance?
Jones the Steamed

When positioned within zero feet in front of a Funktion One sound system the bass chucks out a load of air that's meant to give a crisp super sound to all the people present.  I was selfish and burst an eardrum by sticking my head in the base heavy vibes that my mate Don was blasting out, the air movement from it has to be felt to fully appreciate the quality.

It's similar to a Dyson hand drier but a lot noisier and can brst your eardrums in a pleasant sort of manner, I prefer the occasional base gust of wind supplied by dubby reggae as opposed to the annoying whine of a motorway service station drying contraption.

No drugs, just ace music and a well good time was had.

The boat party and washed out bar beckons.

Boat party was a gay do, me H and Raymond got loaded on vodka and had a whale of a time fucking up the gaydars, H even ended up balls deep in a very nice Spanish girl for the next 2 nights luxuriating in a bed full of love juice the lucky twat.  I had a smelly air bed in camp idiot that turned in to a sauna at approx 9.30 am, no sleep and no bastard drugs either to keep me revved up, just a sweaty sensation and nothing more than getting pissed again on the agenda.

I'm on the sick from work at the moment but that's another story.

Sounds to me like H is the Fucking genius

Monday morning, everyones disappeared as if nothings happened over the weekend, beaches deserted, bars all closed, overcast and dripping rain every now and again H decided he wasn't doing the boat party and wanted to get an early flight out of Zadar.

My mind was set and weather allowing I was going on the boat, H was as miserable as could be so I persuaded him to neck a bottle of wine at the camp site.  Started quaffing the wine by the sea and got in to conversation with a solitary figure from Edinburgh, he had a ticket for the boat too so I talked him round to get on the Argonaughty with me.

Ray had discovered some cheap vodka miniatures in the local supermarket so we set off to relieve the market of all its vodka mini stock and board the boat.

Mission accomplished we joined another 50 or so hardy souls and set sail to nowhere really, don't remember seeing anything as I was boogying around the boat getting harassed by the bum boys which is a compliment in my book.

Before we knew it we were back at the dock due to the driving rain that curtailed our odyssey, party continued in a grateful owners local bar in the pissing down rain.

Fantastic day materialised considering the moaning and groaning that H was bending my ear with earlier.  H got his first shag of the holiday and we met up with a fantastic set of people, I might go to Homoelectric in Manchester next month and carry the party on.

Me dancing in the rain in a bin bag.
Carp

Is that the end then?
Carp

I reckon he got banged up on that gay boat trip. That's why he is off work.
