Do you want flies with that

The best way to feed the 9 billion people expected to be alive by 2050 could be to rear billions of common houseflies on a diet of human faeces and abattoir blood and grind them up to use as animal feed, a UN report published on Monday suggests. Doing so would reduce the pressure on the Earth's forests and seas as food sources.

Why not not miss out the middle man and eat them.

There's no flies land on you now is there
Plastic Man

A while back, I heard a discussion on the radio about this.

If I remember correctly, it was proposed to harvest the maggots (rather than flies) to process as animal food. Given that a free range chicken or a fish likes nothing better than a worm or maggot to chow down on, then this obviously = a good thing.

To me, it makes a lot more sense than pillaging the sea for the ever dwindling stocks of ever smaller fish that are far too small for human consumption and end up as animal feed or fertiliser. Forum Index -> Plankton and Water
