Cilla - ITV drama

I never liked Cilla Black's voice and I wasn't too keen on her as a TV personality either... I remember even as a sprog not watching her show when it came on and I was only about 5 years old.

So I wasn't expecting much from this ITV drama either but thought I'd give it a go as Sheridan Smith is usually brill in everything she's in, always has been.

Anyway, possibly to my future embarrassment, I thought 'Cilla' was bloody great.  Sheridan Smith was superb and she can bloody sing too - not that similar to Cilla but hey, that's a bonus for some of us  Great free telly!

And if she doesn't win a load of BAFTAs and other awards for this performance then I will personally buy a Cilla Black 'Best of' cd and play it for hours on end.

The words ‘ITV’ and ‘Drama’ put together usually heralds the response of “Fuck that” in our house but we bought into the big publicity job they did on this series and I’m glad we did. SS was great. She sounded and looked like Cilla and the lad who played her husband was great as well. I don’t know where they found some of the locations of the back to backs and long rows of terraces but they did a great job on it. Still got the final episode to watch. And for the record I don’t mind Cilla Black. I think she’s got a really sharp sense of humour and she can tell a good story. Ok, a lot of her stories are about knowing The Beatles but I’d fucking tell them as well if I’d known them. And it wasn’t only from when she was a cloakroom girl at The Cavern, she was one of the small group of close friends John Lennon had right through the sixties up to the Apple period. And also for the record I thought she was a great singer. Did some pretty nifty singles in the sixties.

Great songs a lot of em, I just didnae like her voice.  Comes across very well in this even if it an actress pretending to be her

Broadchurch was pretty classy too, talking of ITV Drama, though on the whole you're bloody right.

ITV is usually just a non-channel for me. Mrs D watches T'Emmerdale (which usually means me and Dock Dog have to sit through it as well n' that) but that's it. I couldn't evne tell you any of it's shows apart from X-Factor.*

* A show who's popularity proves that a lot of British television viewers are in the final analysis complete cretins.

I watch Emmerdale  And Corrie.  And occasionally football on ITV.  Harry Hill is a pleasant diversion when nothing else is on the 380 channels of shit.

I think the only thing my mum used to let me ever watch on ITV was The Big Match.

Epsteins car was a D reg. The year in the drama was 1963. That's an A reg - get it right ITV drama

I missed this, did it cover her later career presenting shit telly shows?
Grind

I think she's one of greats. At least her voice does. (works better said than written that one, some of you will have to give it a couple of finks)

What the feckhhhhhh are you on about LD?
Plastic Man

I believe it's called a homophone.

It's how people used to entertain themselves before the invention of tele- and mobile ones.
Plastic Man

I've just finished watching the third episode, viewed over two evenings. I would agree with other correspondents, that typically associating the terms "ITV" with  "entertainment", or indeed, any other positive quality would be an oxymoron. However, I found this short series to be very watchable. While Ms White/ Black's voice/ recordings are "of an era" and not particularly to my taste, Ms Smith's performance was wonderful and the screenplay and sets generally hit the spot.

Unfortunately, what would have been at least a quality of rating of at least a 7 or 8 out of 10, has had to be tempered by the production staffs' ignorance of the correct car registration plate designations of the era (as pointed out by a fellow pedant), which completely ruined my viewing.

Sceenplay/ sets 8/10
Ms Smith's performance 9/10

Overall rating (including veracity of contemporary number plate designations) 1/10
