Cilla Black - RIP

Cilla Black has died.  RIP Cilla.
Frazier Cranium

Shocker.  RIP Cilla.
Grind

She was hard to totally dislike. Except when she started singing.

What, you mean she was a singer?

Spookily I was watching her on those Morecombe and Wise repeats only a couple of days ago. How the hell did she ever get on.
fartcatcher

Truly appalling voice. Massacred quite a few Burt Bacharach songs I believe. Would have got nowhere without the patronage of the Fab Four.

My nan thought she was common.

RIP Cilla.
Heyho

I truly hope we don't start to see all the dirt dragged up now she is dead. By that I mean the 'fringe' Jimmy Savile brigade shite that the media makes out everyone is guilty just because they knew the wanker.
Dock

A true British entertainment heavy weight. She always came across like she enjoyed a giggle and I loved her speaking and singing voice. Alfie is a bonafide pop classic IMHO. R.I.P. Chuck!
Grind

She's the reason Autotune was invented.

Have you seen that advert on telly Dock - Specsavers now do hearing aids. And fitted in the same day
Frazier Cranium

Her early stuff was alright.  Come on, it was the 60s, anyone who made it in pop had to have a certain degree of talent, I suggest.

And 'Alfie' is a great song and her singing on it isn't bad.

I offically didn't like her singing but what the heck, and nothing is as bad as Lulu's Shout any road.

ps 'Humans' is drabt, so sue me, I'm on the wrong thread

Wholly disagree. She could sing otherwise she wouldn't have been given Bacharach/David song's. And not just given songs like 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' and 'Alfie', but in the case of the latter having Burt Bacharach himself come to London and arrange the sessions at Studio 1 Abbey Road. And 'Anyone Who Had a Heart' is a stone cold classic example of a pop song backed with orchestration, and a perfect vocal from Cilla.

Just a guess but I think the negative stereotype of Cilla's singing talents are born out of impressionists in the eighties like Kate Robbins doing impressions of Cilla singing that awful 'Surprise Surprise' theme tune.
Heyho

We shall beg to differ
Grind

At a push, I might let you have Alfie, but there will need to be some serious begging for anything else, unless there's a nugget (that isn't brown) out there of which I am blissfully unaware.

I don't think she took herself overly seriously and, at least from what I remember of her on the few occasions I saw her on the box, came across as genuine enough.

I'll go for number two.

I don't like to start rumours but I heard she used to pocket the money from the cloakroom in the Cavern.
Sir Bulldog Craggwood

Used to love Blind Date - quality clean family entertainment

Remember well watching my uncle's father in law David Gibbs (Leeds legendary ageing lothario) go on in the late 80s in one of the Golden Oldie shows and completely embarrass himself talking shit with a red leather jacket on and James Brown wrap around shades

Been reading some right bitter dogs abuse about her on Twitter because she was a Tory. So fucking what?

The less said about her singing the better but didn't the Smiths break up because Jonny Marr wouldn't accept having to cover 'Work is a four letter word"?
Forest

Her TV work was abysmal. Not bothered if she was one of Maggies mob.

I better not start the rumour about her giving Paul McCartney a blowie then.

He always looks like she's giving him one.

Never really thought about her singing qualities. Opera singers have fantastic singing voices but who wants to listen to too much of that.

I've got nothing but good memories of her on telly and she came across, on telly at least as pretty sound and normal as indeed  some other Tories are.

I hear Cliff is going to be singing at Cilla's mass in Liverpool today. Haven't that woman's grieving family suffered enough. Feckin' Eejit!

Nah. It's a vulnerable boy detector. It's the same model as Codge uses.

Robert Endeacott: Novelist always ready with a witty retort or a smack in the mouth depending on the occasion. Ace!
Frazier Cranium

If only I was that intelligent and 'ard.
