Chronicles Vol. 1 - Bob Dylan

A book by the man himself. A tantalising prospect for me personally as I have enjoyed and admired Bob Dylan's music and lyrics for a long time and was interested to hear more from the man after seeing him interviewed on the amazing 'No Direction Home' documentary.

The majority of the book is about his arrival in New York City as a young man and he paints wonderful pictures of both the city and the bizarre characters that made up the underground culture of the early 1960's in Greenwich village.

As Neil Young does in his autobiography, Dylan flits from era to era in the space of a new paragraph beginning. He conjures up in the mind of the reader just how cold the winters were in his formative years in Minnesota and also vividly recounts a period when he was resident in new Orleans recording with the famous producer Daniel Lanois. He's a great writer and has a talent for capturing a mood or the weather on a particular day.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found Dylan's conversational style of writing totally absorbing and his passion for and knowledge of all kinds of music (trust me on this, Bob knows what's what) was both educational and entertaining. All this and some social history thrown in makes for an excellent first volume of his memoirs.

That is one book I will read before I expire.  I don't know when that will be, though a clairvoyant did tell me what age I will be when I snuff it.

Got a big pile to read!

Bad idea. You should never have a 'to read' pile. It's self-defeating. When there are books on the shelf that you haven't read it becomes workmanlike to go through them. You should read whatever suits your mood at the time. My 'to read' pile is my Amazon wish list (a separate one to the main one that's there for my loved ones to puruse around Crimble time n' that).
