Cass McCombs, Brudenell

Brilliant slow burning understated album Mangy Love released last year. Like a groovier Elliot Smith has bought Kurt Vile in on rhythm.

On in the games room last night at the Brudenell and none other than Brother Butts with Butts Jnr also present at the front.

Not much of a chatterer is ol' Cass but he seemed relaxed and happy with all things around him which is at odds to some of the things I've read about him. The Bass player I'm guessing is a fulcrum of the band with his melodic Jazz like runs that hold the live set together. Cass's guitar playing is effortlessly effective. I think almost entirely finger picked Fender Strat creating a labyrinth of harmony and decoration around the bass that sometimes bursts into crackling solo with the occasional epic extended meander. Had me in awe anyway.

It's the songs that are his forte though  and what made the gig special. Not immediately grabbing admittedly but on subsequent listens they evolve into a treasure like discovery. Coupled with intelligent lyrics charged with pathos, humour politics and insight this fella has it all.

this one typifies I think

Think I might get the album after your review and the small review of it in Mojo's End-of-Year top 50 album list.

PS How's Butts? Is he doing ok?

Its a terrific album especially after a while. Butts' fine, as per. He will be making a press announcement very soon, stay tuned.. I'll be seeing him again at James McMurtry gig a week on Monday at the Brude. Shoud be ace, there's a thread on him somewhere started by Leb who may also be there if anyone else fancies it

Press announcement eh! I'm intrigued. If it's about Springsteen accepting his proposal of marriage then I think we all knew it was only a matter of when, not if.

This is bending my head now. What's Butts big news? Possible's:

# He's shutting Reg down and is going to use the space to develop affordable housing for first time buyers.

# He's written a book: Coming out as a George Jones fan in Chapel Allerton, Leeds, England.

# He's opening a Michelin star eaterie and candle lit caberet venue called Maison Gambo.

Just getting married (to Mrs Butts) - June 24 - intending to get evening invites to those we know on here in 'real life' asap. But DON'T feel obliged to come...

Charming! But I'll rise above that heavy hint and wish you and C all the best wishes that you could wish two extremely nice people. Congratulations Sir! I hope you have a wonderful day.
