Baseball 2012

It was actually my second game of the season last night, but it's such a dull sport, even I'd forgotten I'd been already.

The Fisher Cats lost 4-2 to the Redding Phillies (guess which team they're affiliated with?) in a predictably dull encounter - it was too cold for Roger Clemons's son to make an appearance (his dad might not make too many games in the near future either), so most of the entertainment revolved around which food concession stands to visit (for the record, the fried dough was really quite yummy indeed).

With there being almost as many players and staff as paying punters, the night was dominated by pratt hecklers with awesuuuuume wit along the lines of, "Even Helen Keller could've hit that pitch."

That was one of the better ones - taking the piss out of the opposition isn't very effective when your team is on the receiving end.

For some weird reason, the bloke operating the PA system had it in for one of the opposition. Every time he came up to bat, the strains of "Dude looks like a lady" by Aerosmith was played. He wasn't a happy bunny.

You've got to love AA baseball.
Late Doors

We once sat through a double header in Toronto when they played the Cincinatti Reds. It was excruciating. I've got to appreciate it more over the years though and quite like it now. Not really got a team but always look out for the Cubs. A lot of the fun about the game is away from the pitch

A couple of months ago I did have a shufty scouting potential lower league teams to suggest following on this forum this season, based on the usual criteria (topness of name/ shiteness of team/lowerness of league status/ quality of catering, beer, promotions etc.)

A fairly random choice, the Montgomery Biscuits, did tick some of the boxes.

But to be blunt, based on the historical utterly overwhelming disinterest  in the subject, I decided not to bother this year.

Is anyone vaguely interested, and who should we support?

What ultimately happened to the team that played in camouflage (something patriots?) IIRC, at one stage a creditor had dumped a tractor on the pitching mound to try and secure payment.

I think those might've been the Nashua Defenders - I think they're no more.

The Fisher Cats did win the whole thing for their pathetic level last year, but attendances seem to be at the 500 to 1,000 level, which is shoite.

The Biscuitmen sound a fair choice to me.

First big boys game of the season last night - the Red Sox lost 7-5 in a fairly entertaining game to the Detroit Tigers, featuring the beast that is Prince Fielder

18 years here and I've yet to go to a game. The Mets are so bad I imagine I'll feel at home there?

The Red Sox are usually a bit shite too.

I don't know where you are, but minor league games aren't ridiculously expensive if you want to stick your metaphorical toe in the baseball waters.

Price-wise, I think baseball offer much better value than prices charged even at lower league games in this country.

Tonight the Baltimore Orioles (my team) are taking on the Boston Red Sox, which is  fairly high level match-up. Even at this time, there are still tickets available for $25-30 dollars (approx 15-20). Sure, you can pay a lot more if you want.

For the mid-week series against the Chicago White Sox, there are $15 tickets still available.

For that you get a seat, pleasant surroundings, food and drink on tap and three hours entertainment.

Sport has much to learn over here entertainment and value-wise.

I went to my final minor league game of the season last night (between The NH Fisher Cats and The Portland Sea Dogs - Toronto's and Boston's feeder teams, respectively) and it was of a reasonable standard with the home team winning 7-0 based on a six run second inning.

Koby Clemens (the son of Roger, who's also playing again down in Texas) was the catcher for the Fisher Cats and did a reasonable, if not totally stellar, job in both fielding and batting. He will need a much better overall batting average (I think he was just over 2.1?) if he's ever going to make the step up though.

Tickets to the game ranged between $8 to $17 unless you were off to the boxes. Pretty cheap.

By contrast, I've just been offered a pair of okayish seats to see The Red Sox play The Yankees on September 11th for $180 (face). This is supposedly one of the biggest rivalries in baseball and ticket prices are often much higher than face. May or may not go, depending on what else I'm meant to be doing that day.

The Sox have already shat the bed in terms of any post-season activity (I'm assuming The Yanks have all but already clinched their berth).

Typical - I bought the fecking tickets and now her indoors is flying off to Germany for work.

Anyone want to go for free?

Ha! The Sox won 4-3 and I managed to get a "driver" and (mostly) free beer. Result!
