Barry Hines - Dead

That's what Ian McMillan has just tweeted. Great book and great film. I have the edition pictured below. Based on an era and a community that is now sadly just a footnote in British social history. R.I.P.

PS Can I have a point for Colin Welland (played the teacher in the film adaptation) once having gotten a lift in our family Datsun Cherry back in the early eighties?

How many?

Three, if you count the hair.

I met Barry Hines when I was at school in the 1970s - he came to give a talk about his life and work. Obviously he read passages from his books - including the first passage from Kes (A Kestrel for a Knave) that was read to us by a teacher when I was at primary school - the one where he puts his feet in wellies full of tadpoles.

Always made me laugh.

RIP Barry Hines

I still laugh at that scene with the PE Teacher. I believe Barry Hines and Brian Glover were teachers at the same school in Barnsley. Forum Index -> Sink or Swim
