Barnsley (h) 21.12.13

I'm off, who's in town pre-game, where and what time?
Kingmaker of Lilliput

There is a Strap organised beer on the go pre-match (LD and MDM also on gig and Robson rumoured) which might start in the new "Tapped" bar on Boar Lane around 12.30. Will keep you informed.

Going to be tough tough game today i think. If our defence can be solid as they have been recently we should scrape it

Well here goes. My first match summary:

Shite

Well not shite exactly.

First half no ooomph from Leeds despite having two glorious chances that fell to Smith [unfortunately]. No width, both full backs stuck in their own half, difficult to say who was bottom of the division really, Barnsley also having a couple of good chances.

Second half, Byram on on the right and both full backs pushing on. A lot more enterprise but we were making little headway in the box. On the evidence of this game it was plan [a] stick it on Smiths head and if that doesn't work, plan [b] stick it on Smiths head. Several times I witnessed McCormack shaking his head as another foray came to nought.

Sat [stood] in the South Stand which seems to be the new Kop, pity the team couldn't sustain momentum or get the breakthrough as the atmosphere was pretty good in there at times. Very poor backing from the Kop from where I was sat, two enthusiastic Kop choirs would have been awesome.

I will stick with shite. Simply because they were a team who didn't know how to adapt. Too much predictability in their play. To his credit McDermott did make a couple of tactical substitutions at half time which changed the dominance around but too often the quality of the final ball through or crosses was poor.

I also thought they showed that they rely on McCormack too much.

Thought that little number 11 for them bossed the midfield.

I had the misfortune of sitting in that cheese wedge bit between the south stand and big stand. Full of little kids getting so excited cos they were going around the pitch that they were all puking (honestly). bet a few got a clip round the earole like as they were mimicking the South Stands chants - especially the 'you fat bastard' one when the keeper kicked it out.

I suppose given results over the seasons a 0-0 was ok. They also had that new manager syndrome.

That blond lad is David Perkins, been saying it for 3 years now that we should have signed him, he always plays well against us.  He's 31 though I think, he looks about 15 really.

The Shortest day, when daylight creeps back and darkness retreats. Insert own Leeds united analogy here. Its been a year since gfh took the helm of this wayward ship . Its been a good year. They have done what they have said they would, nothing more nothing less and more importantly they haven't done anything they said they wouldn't.

Talking of recovery signs Leeds town center has been showing them for about 3 months now. Another new pub, the Tapped on Boar lane was the rendezvous for assorted Reggers old and new. A good sesh and three taxis up to the ground courtesy of sheep's, organisational skills and generosity. Salt of the earth is that lad, even refused mine and MGMs offer of 6p

The visitors Barnsley with the inevitable new manager clubs must plan for when playing us attracted a big crowd and chose to attack the south stand first making us kick off towards us first. The cas lads arrived just in time for kick to astonishment all round and Smith won the high ball up field. Barnsley made an immediate  incision cutting through us with ease but paddy was out smartly to intercept. Back we came with Ross taking well before bring fouled but the first chance fell to Smith who controlled well and just had the keeper to beat. It was a great chance and the keeper deserves credit for the terrific save. Alas i suspect that will not be the popular view.

Pelts made a great tackle and won the throw but Barnsley picked up again and hit a tame shot wide. Smith won a great flick on but we do not seem to be able to pick them up. The front two did link up for the next chance and again Smith was one on one with the keeper. This time he made a real hash of the finish

It didn't stop our efforts going forward. Ross put another cross in fir the big lad but he fouled in his attempt to get on the end if it. At least he still had his head up which was good to see. Another cross from Ross then a nice Mowatt touch continued our ineffectual pressing before the ref stepped in with some puzzling decisions, most of them against us. Smith was awarded a foul won i think by our dug out team before Murphy made a terrific fair tackle to end a piece of Barnsley possession.

By now smith was getting some manhandling from his markers ignored by the ref before Barnsley cut through us for a second time but the final ball was dreadful.

Some argy bargy seemed to be erupting in the south stand as smith won another header to no one. Meanwhile Murphy and their annoyingly good no 21 were involved in some tit for tat scuffles both receiving consecutive cards.

Paddy was next into action rescuing a Peltier mistake and Barnsley forced a corner after a good build up. The ref consolidated a little period of pressure giving then undue fouls and ignoring our claims. Paddy had to be  smart to tip over a header before we finally pressed with Ross scuffing a shot after cutting in well.

Nonetheless it was Barnsley who next came close putting a chance wide and it was clear thus game was going to be as close as we thought it would be. In fact Barnsley finished the half forcing a corner making us defend well, particularly Zailukas.

Our manager is not afraid to make half time substitutions as opposed to waiting for the last twenty minutes. Pelts was replaced by young Sam along with Mowatt by Tonge. A volley fired i from left was tipped over the bar and it looked like we wanted to turn the attacking intensity up. Tonge took an early card after a foul he needed to make. Murphy tries to maintain the pressing with a good run through the middle but couldn't find the pass. Frustration must have kicked in as he overhit his next pass moments later to the right. Still we tries collectively to move forward but Barnsley well organised defence and that little blond twat who has is two good games a season were thwarting and testing us with a couple of breaks themselves.

Ross was next up with a half chance hitting it straight to the keeper as the realisation that this wasn't to be our day took over. Another poor cross after good build up was cleared but the next ball into the box produced a good save from their keeper as Paddy clapped either the move or that save. Rudy curled in a speculative shot that bought a more routine save from the same keeper followed by a yellow card for Rudy moments later as the referee hit pedantic mode to frustrate an already under par game . The linesman then weighed in with more pedantry as the good crowd of 31000 was announced. Barnsley took the distraction to break which we held back and responded ourselves but neither team, could produce the quality end ball. Maybe Polean could as he came on for Murphy in a last attempt to create something. Rudy started the final few minutes with a shocking ball and Zailukas won a great defensive block. Another poor cross ticked down the clock before a Barnsley payer got  straight red for a high challenge that left Zailukas with a painful injury on the floor. That and other stoppages caused  6  minutes added time which under normal circumstances would be enough to get the winner. Not today though Pugh didn't make the keeper work to stop a tame shot and the game ended after yet another long diagonal desperate far post cross to Smith was cleared away.

Not a disaster by any means and credit to Barnsley for making it very difficult albeit with some uncustomary (for them) gamesmanship and sneaky rough stuff. Still a great day out , great to see Stripe again in the Tappers along with Leb, sheeps, leb jnr and mg.

Six fucking pence between em.
